Title: Slow turn signals
Post by: Ben_Greenberg on August 30, 2014, 07:40:16 am
Hey guys,
I've got a 78 c15 fleet side and the tour signals flash very slowly. Occasionally not at all. Is this a relay issue? Not too much electrical experience so all help is appreciated!

This is a guess but first place I would check would be the flasher. See if you have another you can swap it with

Are you talking about the flasher relay? A little $4 part?

As long as all of the turn signal bulbs illuminate, I agree with Irish.

Your truck has two flashers that are completely interchangeable (two styles are pictured).  The hazard or 4-way flasher plugs into the top left corner of the fuse box.  The turn signal flasher plugs into a free hanging socket that dangles out of the wiring harness near the fuse box.  Swap the two flashers to see what happens.

If you need to replace the flasher and foresee towing a trailer, replace both flashers with the electronic version.

I replaced the dangling relay. Seems to be good now. If anything changes I will update! Thanks guys!

Hey guys, little update on my flashers. I replaced the dangling relay and the interior indicators are on and click, but none of the exterior bulbs flash.

Ideas? Thanks everyone!

Yes interior works fine but no exterior

Did you get the tin one or the plastic electric one? Do they flash fast or regular speed on the inside?

I got the tin one. Will my local oReilly's carry the plastic one? Also regular speed on the inside indicators

The tin one should flash fast if you have a bulb not working . the electric one should flash the normal speed no matter what. So the flasher is getting resistance some where

Any reason why none of the lights would flash?

On the outside

Do the hazard flashers work?  How about the brake lights?  Have you checked the bulbs?

The brake lights work.... Unfortunately my truck didn't come with the hazard flasher knob on the column so I don't know if that would work

Do both dash turn indicators flash at the same time?  What happens with the brake lights if you step on the brake and flip the turn switch left?  What about right?

The turn indicators in the dash work as normal, just nothing on the outside.  Will try left and right switch with the brakes and report back this evening. Thanks for the input!

I may have found the source of the issue. Seems like I've got A bad alternator. Going to swap that out then update! Thanks for the help this far guys!

I don't see how the alt would effect the turn signals but if it does this would be very interesting

Well... Don't have any explanation for it, but with a new alt in turn signals are working great. It was definitely time for that upgrade.
