Title: electric fans and different power steering?
Post by: shortchevy84 on June 23, 2005, 07:20:00 pm
is it possible to remove the fan from the front of a 350, and put electric fans or otherwise, and free up some horsepower? also i read that a power steering pump can eat 15hp...true? if so, is there more effecient pumps or possibly different size, or lighter pulleys that could be attached to spin it faster or something to use less power? anything else simple like that, that can free up hp that the engine already makes? thanks for the input!

Yes you can replace the fan with electric fans.  www.flex-a-lite.com/ should have what you need.

As for the Power steering, you could swap to a manual box, but the amount of power you are going to gain is not going to be worth the effort you gain in turning the tires.

I would suggest for future readers of this thread that if they are going to try to change the power steering of their fans, they should ensure the safety in doing so. Take note of the compatibility of the other parts like the blades to the motor, etc. Why I am saying this is that because I got a friend who accidentally blew up a fan right on his face due to some electrical problems. Quite dangerous indeed if you will not be careful.

You brought up a 5 year old post to repeat exactly what was said in the previous post?  ???
