It's been awhile since I bent all the valves on my '86. Since then the truck has sat in my yard...waiting. Given that my current work truck (a '90 Chevy) has just developed a rod knock, I'm thinking it might be time to rebuild the '86, fondly named Chester. I live in California, where we have very aggressive smog inspections. I can only do a stock rebuild on this 454, which is fine. I don't need any performance mods. I'm wondering, however, if there are any design flaws I might want to address while I have the engine apart. Are there any special items I might have the machine shop look into? I don't have a garage, so the plan is to drop off the long block at the machine shop and pick it up again when it's done. I don't have the facilities to do any of the building here. The shop tells me to expect around $2,000 to get the build done.
As for the '90, it still runs very well. Compression feels good, though I haven't tested it. Vacuum is normal and it has plenty of power. No roughness, blue smoke or any other problems. Am I insane to think that I might be able to drop the oil pan and swap out the engine bearings to keep it running without a full rebuild?
Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.

$2k sounds cheap to rebuild a big block.
Did the machine shop give you a breakdown of the work they will be performing?
What parts will be replaced and what will be reused?
Will it be name brand parts or cheap overseas stuff?
I'm not trying to rain on your parade. I just don't want you to get stuck with a bill for $3800 when you were expecting to get the job done for done for $2000. Your other post mentioned bent valves, so I'm guessing your in for more than just a simple ring & bearing job.

Thanks. He did give me a breakdown and it sounded pretty thorough. He has a sterling reputation around here, though I've never used him. I think I'll be prepared for some more expense though, especially if we have to start replacing a lot of pushrods and valves. He didn't give me a firm price, just an "about" price.
