i have a 85 chevy C-10 truck-lwb, 2 wheel drive,350 cid motor and auto trans.i'm wanting to put headers and a duel exhaust.what would be the best choice for headers? regular headers(ie:hooker, dynomax) or shorty headers? also-would i need to change anything? the original trans.crossmember is factory notched for only one pipe down the passenger side-wouldn't the collector pipes on regular headers exit just in front of the trans crossmember?would'nt this make it difficult to hook up duel exhaust(such as one from summit)?any help would be great.this site is the best one that i have found for getting good/correct info from.

Doc,
Most of the kits out there will go under the crossmember, so you don't need to change that. As for headers, if you want some that provide you with some clearance, get some Dynomax Chevelle headers. If you do a search here you can find some pics of some installed. Forgot to add, that most full length headers will work, but if you are lowered any, they hang down low. The dual exhaust system we sell is designed for headers also.

thanks roundedline.my truck isn't lowered so i dont have to worry about clearance.i dont have alot of money(wife and 2 kids) so i want to do this right the first time.any suggestions on a duel exhaust kit?i would like to install the headers and exhaust kit myself instead of paying alot of money for someone else to install.

Well, the kit I sell (linked above) is made to bolt in on a LWB truck using headers. They have clamped fittings and it is a X-pipe system. Although it is a clamped system, I personally would weld it, but....
I have also heard good reviews on Dynomax exhaust systems, but I don't think they are for header systems. Chris Lucas

on my truck with the headers, you will need an extra bracket to help hold the power steering pump. anyway, i have flowtech headers, which were about 95 dollars, then i have true duals, just glasspacks, then i have them exiting 1 on each side under the fuel doors i think that they look bad :(. the headers did come down pretty low so i had someone else do the piping, which was 220 dollars, then the tips were 25 each. its worth the price, because it is LOUD!!!!
sorry for the story

85c10-thanks for telling me about the power steering bracket-i forgot about needing that part.how are the flowtech headers?i was thinking about getting those kind.what about catalytic converters? i was asking around here and have some quotes of around $900. for dual exhaust with cat.converters but so far no place here(Va.) will touch the truck without cat converters.dont think i really need cats.wouldn't have a problem with getting a dual ex kit and doing it myself.

Fellow Virginian! Richmond, here. Anyway I have a cat on my suburban that is much different than the cat on my 79 Big10....it is more of a "straight through" cat and very narrow. In fact, years ago i put an exhaust system on my 79 truck, just a single pipe w/ the old type of cat. No muffler. She wasn't loud at all. Fastforward to last year when i got my 91 suburban. I wanted to do the same thing. No muffler, new pipes just a cat. Well, this cat doesn't abosrb any sound. I didn't figure the 3" pipes would be much different...but this puppy was LOUD. Too loud....I was waking up the neighborhood. I had to go back and put a muffler on it.
I agree about the no cat, no touch here in Va. If it is a 76 or later, better have a cat on it. Get one of those "straight through" cats like my sub...won't effect the sound hardly at all.
I am not an exhaust tech man, so I don't know if certain types of cats are only used on certain applications/years, but when i get another cat for my 79, gonna get the straight through design if i can.
