Title: So in theory how long would it take.......?
Post by: audrima on October 18, 2014, 08:34:57 pm
..... to convert a 78 gmc c25 to 4x4, GIVEN you have all the required parts?  due to sentimental reasons replacing frame or cab is not a option. also want to try ifs vs sas (keep the coils in front no springs in front)

tools basic  hand and an inpact gun.

ya I know stupid but it's is just a thought, can't find a 4x4 for winter in my price range so this is about what I can do >.<

With the tools listed... Forever...  Add a torch and air chisel a little more doable.  Remember you have a whole lot of rivets to remove, and pull the engine for the 4x4 engine mounts...  I would make your truck a posi and add some weight.  If you can't get there with 2 decent drive tires you probably don't need to go.  My $.02

I could bum a torch and chisel from dad, but my truckie is stuck in CT not wv >.< if I can get it down here I have a whole shop to work with :> I have posi on my truck already. do need  new tires. really think 2wd with snow tires would go though 2feet of snow n ice? like last winter? I would be selling my kia to buy the parts. (and with snow tires my kia could not get most places last winter)

thanks for the info :D

Rent or borrow a trailer and Move the truck to You

I don't think an IFS swap would be that hard but I have lots of tools and fab equipment too. Ive thought about it, if you got the front clamshell and spindles from a 99-06 Chevy and a driver side drop T case, o think that's about all that would be required. Fab some buckets to move the coils from between the A arms to sit on the upper control arm with a bucket over top. Our coil covers from a newer half ton Chevy. I think torsion bars would be a pain and they suck anyways. I've been thinking about this a lot with a long travel IFS front and a linked rear. Think you would get great rode quality and great off road ability. Sorry that's a bit long winded and all just random stuff rattling around my head, no idea if any of of works

I have always wanted to do a solid front axle swap into a 2 wheel drive chassis & use coil springs, & radius arms like the 70s F150s

thanks,  no need to trailer my truckie she drives... when the head gasket is replaced and the rad is put back in lol(husbands misguided efforts to make me happy :P)

if I only had $3K I could get a nice 85 K35 that's here in town.

thanks :)

IFS would be a pain. I know when you do a solid axle swap on a its it a automatic 4" lift. So if you do it the other way around I would think it would drop it.

You still have to strip the 4x4 (trans, front and rear spring hanger for the front axle, steering components). Someone with the right tools should take 1-2 days. Then about the same time to bolt all the stuff back up.

You would also need 4x4 rear leaf spring hangers as they are longer
