Hi.. I want to tackle getting a proper original steering wheel on my '73 C20. Somebody put a steering wheel from a newer model chevy truck, possibly from the mid 80s. It fits, But when I went to look closer at the horn button that isn't working, nothing looks right inside. I want the original style.
Does anybody know where I can get find an original style steering wheel? Aside from junk yards. And what years will fit without modification? For example, I saw a '79 steering wheel on Ebay, but I'm not so sure it'll work as intended on my '73?
(For reference, what's on there right now, looks like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1973-87-Chevy-GMC-Truck-Blazer-Suburban-JIMMY-Steering-wheel-OEM-Black-/310999791788?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item48690838ac&vxp=mtr
Not what I want.

That is a proper 70's steering wheel. That's the original wheel on my 79.

Did that style go back that far? Mine is supposed to be different. It's supposed to look like this ( I found this after posting)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/73-87-CHEVY-GMC-TRUCK-K5-BLAZER-SUBURBAN-WOODGRAIN-STEERING-WHEEL-73-80-75-76-77-/311145324967?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1973|Make%3AChevrolet&hash=item4871b4e1a7&vxp=mtr
But as far as I can tell the horn set-up is different inside - or missing quite a few parts. no spring, no contact point, etc.

First one listed is a newer 86-87, Silverado. Second is 73-77 or so. Both will fit your 73 but the second is more period correct

Here is another, the plain jane type that came on the Custom Deluxe and Scottsdale through 87

I have 3 extras for sale

Ok now I'm a bit confused. I thought the first one, posted by turpentyne in his topic starter post, was the correct design for late 70's. So when I made my first post here, saying that it looks the same as my 79 which I THOUGHT was original. Am I wrong? If so, Zieg, what would be the proper design for a 79 Cheyenne Camper Special?

Wrong? who knows for sure. I have had close to 100 of these over the years and very few have been the top of the line trim package. I have a book that shows pictures but its where about escapes me as I am in the middle of an office remodel. I only stated what I know to be true. That first eBay reference could have been offered earlier but I don't know that for certain. I've only seen it originally in the top of the line trim package. The link I provided I know came from 79-87 for sure, may be earlier but was on the lower trim offerings. I had one on a 79 Custom Deluxe, one came on my 84 which I just switched out. It came stock on my 85 Scottsdale and a 87 Scottsdale. The second is a 73-on up but don't know what trim models.

Found the book... Supposedly these are 1977 and all wheels appear to be the same regardless of trim package??? If you are concerned see if you can find a color brochure for your year. I have everything I can find for 1985's..

Oh I didn't even think of that! I should bust out my trustworthy 79 sales brochure and see what I can pick out in those fuzzy 70's prints lol.

Here we are gentlemen. The 4 available trim options for 1979 as shown in my mint condition sales brochure are as follows. Custom Deluxe and Scottsdale trims offer the "plain jane" style (posted in the craigslist ad) while Cheyenne and Silverado offer what's listed under the Cheyenne package as a "Custom Steering Wheel" (terpentyne ' s first ebay link).
