I know  there had recently been some talk about mufflers, so I'll bring it up again. I'm looking for loud.  I've got a 76 K10 4x4, stock 350, and long tube headers.  I'm looking for something loud, I can't run straight pipes, but can do about anything else. When I bought the truck, it was set up with the headers, and what looks like a flowmaster mufflers.  they're pretty well pasted at this point so I wanted to put something else on. I'm not running cats, its a duel set up.  Reading a description at a website isn't much help when it comes to sound, so I was looking for real world user opinion.  I've heard the flowmaster 40 series are pretty loud, but I'm not sure I want to spend that much.  How loud are glasspacks?  Just looking for opinions.  Thanks.

glasspacks have more of a loud crack but flowmasters have a more throaty sound.

Imo, glasspacks are louder but don't sound as "Hotroddy"
that is why I am changing mine from glass to flows on my 83 4x4 383

If you want really loud install gates, like they used to do in the old days.

The Magnaflow round muffs are LOUD !!!!!!! I've got a pair under my '81. They look pretty darn good too, they're stainless steel, and pretty much look like a pregnant glasspack. Oh yeah, they don't blow the packing out like glasspacks do either! You can find them in the Summit catalog for $64.00 a peice. also they don't take as much room as the glassers do as the Magnaflows are only 14'' long.

on my truck i got long-tube headers, and glasspacks. my truc is a long bed, so i have he exhaust exiting on each side of the truck coming out righ under the gas door. it sounds bad :(, and its only a 305.

i just got a flowmaster put on and it sounds ok ..im cutting the cats next week ..should i buy a glass pack type and change out my flowmaster?

i have 3 inch exhaust  with headers and no cats... for my mufflers i have dynomax bullets that go into five inch stacks...  if u want to shake windows while its idleing i would suggest these...  they are only about 40 dollars each also...  i get dizzy sometime above 4500 rpms sometimes... thats how loud they are...

I got a fairly mild 350 with long-tube headers, no cats, dual  2 1/4" pipes with H pipe and Dynomax Ultraflo's to Magnaflow 3" tips exiting angled behind my rear tires. It's definitely there but it's not overpowering loud. It burbles around town really nice and above 3500 has a nice rappity sound to it. I thought it would be louder than it is, considering I have no cats. Keep in mind, the bigger the pipes, the louder and boomier the sound. I had a Dakota R/T with a single 3" pipe to a 3" in/dual 2.5" out FLowmaster 50 series, then to a pair of Megs tips. After I gutted the cat, it was LOUD. Much louder than my truck is now. The cat on that truck made a fair bit of difference. Doesn't seem to on this one. I found the Flow to be very poppy on decel which I didn't like. Wasn't very smooth.

thanks again to everyone for the replies. I went with the magnflows bullets, 4 inch case, straight through. about 14 inches long. I've got long tube headers, no cats, 2.5 inch pipes, exiting under the bed, just in front of the rear x.  I've pretty much got the sound I was looking for. very loud.  need tailpipes though, it makes the whole back of the truck rattle.  a little rough on deceleration, but I can live it it.  From all the beating and banging, i've loosened up the pass side header.  now I've got to pull those off and replace the gaskets.  they were due anyway. Thanks again to all the responses

I love those magnaflows, I've got 'em on my '81 and also had them in my '62. They are THE best bang for the buck muffs I've ever bought.

I run Flowmaster 40's on my 78 K-10.  I like them, but running open headers on the last truck and some loud music has cost me a little over 1/8 of my hearing(feels like someone is covering my ears all the time).  So, at 17 and not liking that feeling, I listened to my dad's 79, which uses a 2.25" kit from a mail order catalog with their turbo mufflers and an old set of re-enforced manifolds(have the bars between the center and outer ports) and it sounds good.  So, the 78 will get the same this summer and the Flowmasters will go on the 77 K-10 project.

Here is what I like the sound of, not in any particular order:
1. Thrush straight through glasspacks
2. Flowmaster 40 series
3. Super Turbo mufflers
4. Flowtech Terminator mufflers

My 81' is running 2 1/4" true duals with Flow tech shorty headers and 40 series Flowmasters. It has a 305 in it all stock and is very loud at cruising speed but a nice rumble at idle. I will be looking to quiet it down at a later date. As for the price, you can buy them on EBAY all day for $37. from "performancepeddler". He is a Flowmaster dealer and has great prices. They have been the best sounding mufflers I have had to date. The loudest was glasspacks with the packing burnt out. Take them out of the box and soak them in a degreaser for a few days then install them and getthem hot as heck. The packing will soon follow. They are great for the rat-te-tat-tat sound.

I have only one Thrush Glasspack on my stock 85 K10 but it still is loud enough to turn heads, the truck itself is titled Black Thunder but it's just a redneck beater. The best part is that the exhaust clamp is broke right after the down pipe on the manifolds so we sometimes slip the exhaust off. It can be heard over 2 miles away but that is out in the country where there isn't a lot of noise to begin with.

^ That kinda sounds like my old high school buddies truck. His dad had a stock 86 Dodge 1/2 ton with a 318 2bbl in it that he got to drive around. The clamp from the cat outlet to the tailpipe was loose so that if he hit a water puddle deep enough, it would pull the tailpipe away from the cat.  And then we'd go making some noise   It actually sounded really good. Really gargly and made an awesome noise from about 3000 RPM and up.  Before going home, he'd stop about a block away from home, slip the pipe back in and all was quiet again

currently on my '73 C20 i have stock manifolds with the 2 into 1 crossover and a single (poorly welded) thrush red glasspack and turndown tip.... its not quite what id like, but its nice and loud so i dont mind. in the near future im planning Summit headers with 3-bolt bolt-on Flowtech Purple Hornies mufflers (which will be painted blue to match the engine) so its cheap, simple, and should sound great. also, i can easily pull them off to run open headers if i choose

I'm running 40 Series Flowmasters. I did it because i had Glasspacks with Echo Tips on there before. I work at a Casino and come home at 4 in the morning. I did it out of consideration for my Neighbors. The Flowmasters are Quieter, but they're by no means in the range of "normal" Mufflers. I Put some really wide tips on the ends of my Tailpipes and it made em sound a little louder and a little more Throaty. I highly suggest that you get the 40 series Flowmasters. There is such a thing as too loud. Of Course, you could always go with no Mufflers at all, but that would be illegal.

If you want blue glasspacks, when I was in high school (early 90s) the Purple Horney of back then were called Blue Bottles and were....blue.  Not sure who makes them or if they are around anymore but that was their actual product name.
