I just bought a 1985 Chevy k20 and the temp gauge doesn't work and I'm new to square body's just trying to get some ideas on what to check to get it working
-
check the drivers side of trhe engine there should be a probe with a wire connected to it. well there might not be one connected and that could be the problem or the sending unit probe itself could be the problem.
it may also have the probe somewhere else like the top of the thermostat housing. again check for a wire connected.
if you find the probe and it has a wire connected then the gauge itself could be bad or not hooked up properly/at all.
theres a few points to start your investigation. let us know what you find!

Yes there wasn't a wire on the probe but I had one that was not hooked up so I put in on it but now I'm not sure if it is the right wire.. I followed tj back it turns into a red wire someone changed the color and it goes to a big plug into the air box ..

Did you look at the wiring diagrams in the tech section for your truck? It will show you which wire should go where.
