Title: 81 k10 longbed stepside brake drum/front end issue
Post by: moneyg77 on December 15, 2014, 12:16:28 am
Hi all, I have an 81 k10 longbed stepside issue/front driveshaft issue

1.) Driveshaft-when I put it in 4x4 it rubs in the front..i just had a used shaft rebuilt and I was wondering if anyone could help me with that.

2.) Brake drum-when I first get on the brakes the rear locks up with light pressure, but after getting on it a couple times before I leave the house it does fine. I'm going to a buddy to get a diagnostic but was wondering if any of you guys knew what it could be so I can fix it. I've never messed with them so this subject is foreign to me.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Does your truck have a lift kit?
Where does the front shaft rub?

Are the rear brake cylinders leaking?  Any work been done to them recently?  Have you inspected them.

The rears locking up sounds like a leaky axle seal

If axle oil gets in the drum it will make the brakes lock up easy

There was leaking inward side of both brake drums and yoke, as well as the front.

I went to have my issues diagnosed and after 5 minutes the mechanic said that there was no need. He said that when I had the front end rebuilt the mechanics didn't know what they were doing. He says the front end is not operating properly because they did it wrong and didn't assemble the hub lockouts in addition to any diff issues already in existence.

Rear end - he said the yoke had way too much play which could mean the rear diff is shot. He recommended I just go out and find new axles. He said mine were too tired would require a full rebuild. He says he's trying to save me monry.

Any opinions??

Does your truck have a lift kit?
Where does the front shaft rub?
It has a 6" BDS lift with 35's. I can go more in depth with mods if necessary. Looks like I may need to just find some more axles..if so, I'm gonna go 3/4 ton. Know anyone getting rid of some in the Midwest?
