Title: Opinions On Steering Wheel
Post by: DuckAholic1 on December 21, 2014, 05:38:24 pm
Hi All, Thinking about changing out my steering wheel. Before I do, I'd like to get some opinions &/or options from my fellow chevy owners. I really like the classic Grant wheels, walnut finish & the classic black. I'm just afraid of taking away from the stock look of my truck. What other year wheels would fit my 87?? I like the 94 yr wheels also. Will those fit. Anyone sell new replacement of the stock one? Appreciate any thoughts!

i have this exact wheel in my 77 and i absolutely love it.

if you ask me its not a huge jump away from a stockish look. i mean its not like your puttin a gold chain wheel in there

I"d like to find something smaller than the factory wheel, maybe thicker too... I'm used to newer cars (15-25 years old) and the truck wheel is huge and thin.

For factory steering wheels I have always liked the 1979-1981 Z-28 steering wheels . They are thick and comfortable. I think they are called rope wheels. I also have seen the old Oldsmobile 4 spoke wheel in a 1978 truck. I really liked that one as well however I could never find one.

As far as a Grant wheel, my son and I put a signature 3 spoke wheel in the 79 truck. We had to buy the adapter also. The only problem is that the adapter has a 2 inch spacer that has to be put in. I do not have tilt steering yet but it will need put in the truck in order for this wheel to work. The steering wheel is too far back now. I know that they make a one inch adapter but I still don't think it will help. If you have a tilt wheel then you will have no problems. If you do not have a tilt wheel then pay close attention to the kit that you need to use to mount the steering wheel. My son bought it at O'reilly's for $99.

That's close to what I want, the one I want is a LaCarra and the spokes are solid, no big spaces.

I have a steering wheel out of a '90 K1500 in my '77 and love it.

One other option would be a early '90s Cavalier.

There are several examples in this thread:

Yes. I saw a video on youtube of a guy driving a lifted 80's model that had a Trans Am steering wheel. :)

Any of the (relatively) old GM steering wheels will fit as long as it isn't a airbag setup.

After further review..I think I'm really leaning towards a 91ish 1500 wheel. Really like the leather ones.

I am in the same position looking for a new steering wheel. The stock one i have is starting to mark every pair of pants I wear when getting and out of the truck.

I've got a stepside with a woodbed and was looking at this one on classic parts, but seems spendy. Any other similar options or better prices for this one out there?

Not the best pic, but I got the new steering wheel in last night.  Easy swap with the steering wheel puller.

Here is a better pic in natural light. It looks better in the natural light IMO.
