So I have a 1973 Grand Sierra 4x4. It (was) my daily driver. Today the head gasket blew on me.
That said, the engine was in need of rebuild anyway. Leaking all over! LOL.
At this point, though, I'm not sure if I should the existing engine rebuilt (by someone else - don't have the tools, space, or skills to do that myself) or if I should just get a crate engine instead.
My interest isn't in big power/performance but in longevity and reliability. I also don't have a ton of cash so economical would be great.
I don't care about having all matching parts or anything so changing to a different engine other than the 307 would also be fine.
Any input much appreciated... including ballpark costs on having the existing engine rebuilt and/or suggestions on crate engines and suppliers.

Is the 3rd digit of the Vin X? If you want power and performance a 307 isn't the best platform but if your budget is tight then just rebuild it, put a mild cam in it, see what heads are on it, upgrade the ignition system and bolt on some goodies as you can afford them.

A GM Crate motor comes with a warranty as does others. Doing it yourself generally won't have a warranty and if someone it building it like a machine shop you would have to verify with them (in writting) what their warranty is.

Probably less heartache -- and more certainty -- buying a 350 crate. You can get the base 260hp 350 Chevy crate engine for $1510 from JEGS, delivered.
