Title: $75. 1957 Chevy truck.
Post by: Engineer on January 06, 2015, 06:14:30 am
Interesting story behind this truck. Man gave $75. for a 1957 Chevy truck then drove it another 38 years.

He could probably sell it and get his money back....... ;D

I remember when I was a kid, in the back pages of magazines, there were advertisements for $50 surplus Army jeeps. I don't think that somehow these are the same things.

40 years ago a running 25 year old truck was about $400
So $75 was about right for a non runner

And $75 was alot of money back then , real money
And the US dollar was just a couple years past being backed by gold .
The fedgov couldn't print it willy nilly like they do now

In 2004 I bought a running Mazda for $200
Drove it 6 years and sold it for $1000

i saw that article and thought to myself, "here's a guy who could appreciate and use a 305 if it were free."

BTW, i have a 305 available free.  Needs to be rebuilt.  You may scoff at it.  But think about it this way:   For the price of rebuilding it, you could have very cheap dependable transportation for probably 200,000 miles.

i loved this engine, but i just can't see myself using 305's anymore;  i've switched to 4.3 v-6's for transportation as they make almost the same hp and tq as a 305.  If i need more power i'll go with a 350 at minimum.  The 305's don't return that much better mpg than a 350 based on my experiences.

But anyways, back to the article, Yeah, that's what it's all about----getting max use out of a vehicle.  That's why i went chevy and that's why i went with this style truck.   (well, i like the looks of it too).

And yes, i remember when there were cars in our local pennysaver for $100.  They ran too.

Reminds me of the C.W. McCall song 'Classified'...
