I have a 1982 Chevy tilt steering column that I am about to install in my 78 GMC, but were the shifter pin goes into the column cover it has one tab broke off which holds the shifter in place. So my question is how do u remove the cover and second will my original nontilt cover work in replacement since the tilt function is after the cover? Any insight would be helpful thank you!

Have you looked at this post: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=12525.0
The shifter portion is below the tilt section so you have to tear it WAY down. I "think" the shift portion is the same, but don't quote me on that.

Thanx Captkaos I was looking but didn't find that one, I appreciate your help.

Unfortunately it doesn't go beyond this point in the tear down of the steering column my problem is right here where the pin goes through the gear selector. The bottom ear is broke off.

No it doesn't go that far as it only went down to the tilt. You should be able to tell what to remove next though and keep going.
Are you talking about the ear on the shift lever?

Yes that's what I was referring to

Did you figure it out?

Nope not yet, the project is on hold right now working on radiator install and replacing fuel sender right now.
