Hey guys I'm trying to identify what these chunks of metal are from that I found when I pulled my transmission pan to change the filter and put in new fluid in my newly purchased transmission. It was supposedly rebuilt 5,000 miles ago along with the engine. Just wanting to know what I'm walking into if I attempt to rebuild it whether I'll just need a normal rebuild kit or more. I have this trans as well as the original 700R4 that I don't think has been touched before and If I need a full rebuild which would you recommend to do. Engine is a 383 putting out around 430 hp. Thanks, hopefully someone can help out.

Not sure what they are from. If it was me and both transmissions needed a rebuild, I would go with the 700 and heavier duty parts to be more reliable with your hp numbers. That's what I did in my 73. The 700 I am using will handle about 500hp.

Looks like pieces of a sprag
-
Agree. Sprag is one of the quick-blow fuses in the TH350. Did you lose 1st in Drive, but still have manual 1st?

After looking into it I'm thinking it was the sprag as well. You can see the cutout for the roller bearing in the one piece. At least thats what it looks like. I'm gonna have to tear it apart and then look into either a rebuild or new transmission depending on cost difference. I wish I could say about the gears. I bought the transmission that was supposedly rebuilt 5,000 miles ago along with the engine and just finished installing it in the truck. I drove the engine/tranny combo in the 69 camaro it was in and it seemed alright then but who knows if the guy took it to burn off the tires before pulling it or something. I'd like to think not because he seemed pretty stand up.

Don't feel to bad about it,I rebuilt my Th 350 and installed a B&M shift kit.2nd gear was really harsh and wound cracking the outer sprag race within a couple hundred miles.pretty cheap trans to rebuild

When I put the B&M shift kit in mine, I did some research: it seems the B&M kit is pretty hard on the trans. Following online advice (search for "Jake Shoe") I did not disable the 1-2 accumulator, I did not remove any check balls, and I only drilled the supplied separator plate holes 0.125" (plate blocks the 2-3 accumulator), and I used the supplied dual feed (gold) plate.

Thanks guys. The transmission is coming out in the morning and will hopefully be torn down by next weekend. School starts up this week so times getting shorter but I need this truck ready to ride by April. I'll give you an update when I know more. Will definitely have questions on where to go.
