Title: 1980 K20 Replacement Rear Hub
Post by: srozell on February 23, 2015, 11:26:54 pm
I think I'm using the right terminology, but if what I say doesn't make sense, maybe I'm not.

In pulling the drums off my truck, I discovered that some of the axle flange bolts were quite loose, and further inspection revealed that some of the threaded  holes on the hub are stripped.

I haven't been able to find replacement hubs online, but perhaps I'm calling them the wrong thing.

Is anyone able to help me with this?

If the threads aren't completely destroyed, then you may be able to chase the threads with a tap to straighten them.  A helicoil kit may also be an option too.

Some of the holes look like they've been honed they are so smooth. The previous owner literally used caulking to make the bolts stay in.

Using helicoils would be my last resort.

14-bolt full float rear axles with the inboard mounted brake drums are a dime a dozen.

Look around. Should be able to find one at a swap meet, classified ads, junk yard, or the local mud truckers.

I'll keep my ear to the ground. There are no scrappers around here that carry these trucks, in the meantime I'll helicoil the hubs that are on there.

The helicoil repair should be more than adequate.
Besides salvage yards, another option is keep an eye on Craigslist (or equivalent) for pickup bed trailers as well as axles... Then there's always eBay.

I know this is an old topic but the helicoils are common on hubs. I do a couple a month on over the road trucks and trailers. If you really want to replace the hub with a new one, take the hub or axle ID to a fleet supplier like Fleetpride and they can order them.
