Title: 700 r 4 hasd reverse but no forward gears
Post by: NCali on March 05, 2015, 10:13:38 pm
700 r4 in my 87 1/2 ton. Trans has 28,000 miles on the last rebuild. Driving away from a stop in low gear it shifted into 2nd and Bam, lost all forward gears. Reverse works,

So a guy I work with offers to help me rebuild it and tells me about Monster transmissions and their kits. also tells me to get a "beast" sun-shell and a few other "hardened parts" that they sell for that trans

I know that we are to busy at work to rebuild a trans after working a 12 hour shift so I go back to the shop that did the last rebuild. This guy has a one man shop and has been in business for as long as I can remember. He runs a reputable business and has always been honest with me.
I ask him about this "beast" and these other parts they sell in their kit and he began telling me the history of the 700 r4 and the modifications that he did to it the last time
He doesnt believe that my problems are with the sun shell anyway
He has the truck and said that he will let me know what the damage is tomorrow

So has anyone used "the beast" or a Monster rebuild kit from monstertrans .com? are the parts they sell really better than what a trans shop would normally use? He has done all of the updates to this transmission already, should I get anything extra for the rebuild?

idk for sure, but google monster trans and their problems with the trans they build themselves. if they cant get it right with their own parts i doubt someone else can

I use the "Beast' in every stock build I do along with the Alto 3\4 clutch pack.Higher HP engines get more hp parts, but then the customer knows it will have more aggressive, positive shifts

Sounds like you lost your forward clutch or low roller clutch.

The forward clutch is used in all forward gears and not in reverse.

if your sunshell gears were stripped you wouldn't have reverse. That said( the beast) is a very reputable sun shell, and someone correct me if im wrong but wasn't it first introduce by Sonnax ? That's who I would go through for a rebuild kit.  Also if I had a transmission go bad after 28000 I wouldn't go back to the same builder. Just my .02

Big ten:
He told me that the stock sun shell was originally machined with a square shoulder at the spline end . That square corner was a weak spot so through out the industry, weather it is the beast or  a GM part , they are all machined now with a radius at that point and "hardened (heat treated).

Aggressive shifts : I can live with.  You said that higher HP get more HP parts. I know this is only a 305 and it is a stock motor so that is far from high HP. But would those high performance parts give me a more reliable trans . I dont tow with this truck , or race it but I do get up on the gas on my daily commute of 35 miles to work.

I still havnt heard from him today to find out what he found , when I do I will post his findings

Hopefully something simple like forward clutch feed pipe or accumulator. The Beast sun gear shell is much thicker than stock unit
