Title: more room behind the wheel?
Post by: jim.clark.52687506 on March 17, 2015, 02:27:35 pm
what are people doing to gain more leg room and belly room behind the steering wheel? I would like to keep the factory bench seat if possible but can you take some of the padding out of the backrest if I have the seat recovered or are there replacement seats that afford more legroom? I'm not so much worried about space behind the seat

These cabs weren't like the newer ones.  The cushions on the 81-87 seats are molded into the frame...  You won't gain anything by triming them other than discomfort.
There are a few topics on this have you searched the forum?  using the factory bench you are not going to gain anything.

one thing you can do to gain some belly/thigh room is get an aftermarket steering wheel that is a smaller diameter than the stock one. this is especially helpful if you dont have a tilt column

I changed the steering wheel out with an 88 up four spoke design and gained quite a bit of belly room
