Title: Stoooopid 16.5" rims
Post by: Man With A Gun on March 27, 2015, 04:47:11 pm
I spent 5 hours on Sunday prepping and painting my 16.5" stock rims.

Now I find out there's pretty much only ONE tire that's available in a 16.5" rim... the Firestone Transforce HT.

Anyone got any pics of their 73-87 of this tire on stock rims and hubcaps? I'm wondering what it will look like on the truck.

There's at least 6 others I can think off off the top of my head.  What size were you looking at?

The truck has 30" firestone tires now.

I should have mentioned i don't want to go to 35's. There are plenty of choices for 16.5's in larger tires but not in sizes less than 35.

Three ruptured discs in my back. It hurts enough getting in and out of the truck now.

If I did manage to find some 16.5" 33's how much lift would i need to add?

It's a 1977 K20 Camper Special. I doubt the original springs have ever been changed.

You should be able to run 33s with no lift

No one makes 16.5 anymore
They have a habit of popping off the rim

I should have said that very few people make 16.5 tires anymore

And Ina few more years I doubt anyone will make 16.5 tires

We wanted some slot mag wheels but they only were made in 16.5. No one ever made any 15 or 16  8 lug slot mags

yeah i know they are slim pickins. i might just sell my 16.5 just so i dont have a worthless rim on my hands. its a shame they look nice and i bought them years ago not knowing much about tire selection they had then and its only gotten smaller since

I saw the price of 16.5 set of 4, and I went and got a set of 2000 GMC 2500 rims plus tires for half the price ( set of 5!) 16.5 are rare and costly. good luck though!

They did make some slots in 16" - 8 lug, and I found and grabbed some. :)  Hard to find tho.

Unless they are some nice old school wheels, I would ditch the 16.5"s I have a set of aluminum slots on my K20 which are nice but they still make tires to fit them. You have a lot more options in terms of tires and wheels with 16"

That's the thing. They are very nice originals. That's why I want to get some tires to fit.

I guess I'll go with the Teansforce HT's. Seems to be the only option without lifting the truck.

These are my original rims after I've painted them. I still need to detail the hubcaps a little more.

This is what is currently on the truck. And if I stay with a size close to these tires (30") I'll be able to swap them whenever I want as long as my new tires don't require lifting the truck.

Those wheels cleaned up really well, that's a good looking truck too.

A couple of thoughts I have to offer:
If you want to keep the factory wheels, there are still quite a few 16.5" tire widths and tread designs available in bias ply. I still run bias ply on a couple of my old trucks; the ride isn't bad.  Power King is one company that still offers bias ply in 16.5"

If you want to go with 16" wheels and keep the stock look, most factory installed 16" 8-lug wheels from 70's -80's Chevy/GMC, Ford, Dodge, International trucks and vans will swap onto your truck and take the stock hubcaps.

Whoa! That's the way to go then. I just want to keep the stock hubcaps. Any white rim that will take them is good enough.

Specifically, what rims will take the stock hubcap?

???

Pretty much any stock GM/Ford/Dodge truck, van, Suburban from the 70's up to the 90's, that was 8-lug should accept the stock hubcaps.

My '73 GMC has wheels that were original equipment on a '92 or '93 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup.

You could look for 16" 8-lug wheels from:
70's and 80's Chevrolet/GMC C-20/K-20 and SRW C-30/K-30 and up to '91 C-20/K-20 Suburban; 80's U.S. Army CUCV Chevy Pickups; 70's through 90's Chevy/GMC 20 and SRW 30 Vans
70's - 1997 Ford F-250 or SRW F-350 pickup; 70's through 90's Ford Econoline E-250 and SRW E-350;
70's through 1993 Dodge D250/W250 and SRW D350/W350 trucks; 70's through 90's Dodge B250/B350 vans.

SRW=single rear wheel (i.e., not dually)

Hope this helps...  Good luck and keep us posted!
