Title: SM 465 Parts questions
Post by: HACK on March 28, 2015, 01:28:11 pm
I had a clutch issue with my truck I Pushed in the pedal and things never quite worked right after a cracking noise and some misc. pieces seemed to move about.  I assumed it was a throw-out bearing that came apart due to some noise I had been hearing previously to this happening. (Especially when cold)  Anyway I got it pulled apart yesterday and found that the bearing was still intact, however a cylindrical tube that extends over the input shaft has cracked and is broken free from the tranny housing.  I assume its part of the input shaft bearing and seal.   My main question is what is this part called exactly and can you get something like that at an autoparts store.  Is there a better place to get that kind of part.  Any info would be helpful.  I would like to replace the input and output shaft seals/bearing while I have it out also.  Thanks for reading.

Sounds similar to an issue I addressed with my '74.  When I first got it, it shifted okay, but made a horrible racket whenever the clutch was engaged.  Anyway, what I suspect you're seeing as a "cylindrical tube" is the same as I discovered; the interior section of the input shaft/throwout bearing that directly contacts the shaft itself. It apparently seized on the shaft, snapping the bearing into two pieces.  Incredibly, the shaft and everything else was fine. New bearing and it was good to go.

Be very careful when torquing down the input shaft housing when you replace the seals - it is rather brittle, and will crack around the bolt holes if overtightened.

Good luck,

As "bake315" stated it's the "input shaft housing". The throwout bearing slides back and forth on this shaft as you depress the clutch pedal, so it needs a light coating of grease. I would imagine that at some point the throwout bearing seized and tried to spin the shaft, and that's no good.
