This happens overtime on the street but if im in mud it will kick right out if i gun it. What causes this? Could it be the transfer case going out?

You mean it's physically shifting into Neutral? If that's the case, look at your linkage, engine/trans mounts, cross member etc.

get in the truck and have a buddy lying on the ground beside the truck watching the oil pan/transmission/transfer case and seeing how much it moves when you shift into drive. then kinda "power brake" it a bit to see if there is any movement. not light the tires up just kinda rap on the gas a little bit while holding the brakes good

I have the same issue and the driver side engine mount was shot so the torque would kick me into neural. The odd thing is that I it didn't start happening until I tightened up to tilt column. I I initially thought I messed something up until I realized the slack from the loose column was preventing the motor mount issue from shifting the tranny.

Well i blew the tranny a while ago and after putting a new one in it quit kicking into neutral
