Can someone explain to me how they work? I'm putting a 700R4 in my 76. When looking for a wiring kit I see kits that have switches for manually locking converters in second or third gear, http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=330
Then when I talk to people they tell me that will cook the trans and fluid. Any help is much appreciated.

The 700'in my old 82 didn't have a single wire on It
So i have no idea how it locked up
I think transmissions build more heat when they slip than when they lock up

GM calibrated the transmission to automatically kick out of lockup and high gear under full-throttle to avoid burn ups. the 82-87 style is actuated hydraulically at a set pressure without computer input. the 88 ones are computer controlled but can be retrofitted for the old hydraulic style. 89+ cant be retrofitted at all due to the port being block off completely. i think you can swap parts with most of them so you can have a toggle switch in a old one but then you have to remember to turn it off so you dont burn it up

The early models done hydraulically and solenoid power went thru a stoplight and vacumn switch to energize it.Transgo offers a kit that makes it hydraulic only but in some cases it dosnt work well.Adjusting governor weights and springs will improve it.I source the wsitch and related wiring with the vacumn delay valve from mid 80s suburbans or you can source an adjustable vacumm switch to dial it in but I would still use a delay valve.As stated earlier 90 models do not have a provision in the valve body for the hydraulic spools,the casting is blocked
