I have a 78 shortbed. Has anyone made their bed into a dump bed? Is so, what are the pro and cons of doing it? thanks
-
Can't think of any cons
Used to be a company that made all the parts and sold a kit
Probably have to reinforce t he bed I doubt it's strong enough to support the cargo if it's not sitting on the frame
Some place used to make an insert
Kinda like a bed liner that dumped
I have a 6x10 dump trailer and it's very handy
Every time I make a trip to the landfill i see people spending 45 minutes to unload trash and debris from their truck or trailer
I open the tailgate hit the button and I'm gone

probably not the one you are refering to though

the only con i can think of is it being a short bed stepside. for private use it wont be bad, but if you plan on doing business with the cubic feet will be really small.

Or one of these:

Several companies make them. I don't see a price right now, but from memory they are more expensive than converting your bed to dump.
Only thing I don't like about the dump beds is that you loose your rear bumper in most cases!
-
and everyone i have ever seen with a conversion makes the bed sit up a few inches higher so the body lines dont line up
-
Someone also makes a mat like a conveyor that empties the bed when you turn the crank

Check your dmv laws, here, my friend put on of them bed dump lifts ( like flat black posted) and was forced to up the weight thus pay more and get a B plate(business plate) even though it's a personal use truck.
beyond that, he twisted his 96 1500 frame with the lift lol.

I don't know how you could be 'forced' to up the weight rating?! Making your bed articulate so you can use it like a dump bed does nothing to increase the load carrying capacity of the frame and suspension!
Sounds like he got bamboozled by his local government!
-
it has to do with moving from personal use to business use, you have to declare a weight. ya I think it's a rip that just making it dump (or flat bed for that matter) automatically makes it business use.

wonder if you could make it look right if you put a 1 or 2" body lift on the cab to line the body lines back up

i know in maryland the DOT will chase you down if you pass a scale house in a truck with a utility body and welder on the back. even with no stickers on the truck, they claim if you make money with your truck then you need to go into the scales. my buddy wasnt even working just driving someone some parts.

West Virginia so eh not really!
