Title: will a (long) stepside bed fit on an '87 1 ton frame?
Post by: kuribo on April 28, 2003, 11:59:00 am
Does anyone know whether or not there are any long stepside beds that would fit on a K30 '87 1 ton frame? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

The only long box stepside beds I've seen were on early '50s Chev/GMC trucks, and few at that.

I have seen aftermarket replacement long stepside beds for 1/2 and 3/4 ton 73-87 chevy trucks, but not for the 1 ton. What is different about the 1 ton frame as compared to the 3/4 ton?

I know a guy that had an 86 3/4 2wd longbed stepside.  It was dark green.  I also see one around campus (an 85-86) that has toolboxes mounted on the sides, and they look like a factory installed option.  Is a one-ton frame narrower than a 3/4?

the frame is the same, The rearend on a cab and chassis is narower than a pick up or duelly. This in turn means your inner tires would rub the bed.

So if I convert the dually rear by changing the hubs to a single rear, I will be able to put a 3/4 ton stepside long bed on the 1 ton chassis without any problems?

I am wondering if the wheelbase on the 3/4 ton and the 1 ton are different? If they are, it wouldn't work without shortening the frame or maybe moving the rear spring mounts????  Anyone know about this?  thanks!

I believe the wheelbase of a regular-cab long box 3/4-ton is that same as a similar 1-ton or 1/2-ton.

If you put a step or fleet side bed on a dually truck the outside tires will stick out. If you put a bed on a cab and chassis the inside tire will rub the wheel well. The dually has the same width and the same hubs etc. as a single rear wheel 3/4 or 1ton. The rear of a cab and chassis is narrower in other words the backing plate is closer to the spring perch.
