Just picked up a M1009 Military Blazer CUCV.
It's a rust free truck from Colorado.
The drivetrain is stock with a 6.2 diesel, turbo 400/208, and 10 bolt axles with 3:08 gears.
It has a 6" Pro Comp lift and 35" BFG mud terrain tires.
I'm not a huge fan of running 35" tires with a 10 bolt gov lock rear end, but it sits nice. I'll see how the 10 bolt holds up.
I got a few issues to fix. It runs strong, but sometimes it stalls letting of the throttle. If I'm lucky, its the fuel filter, but with my luck, its the injector pump. The fuel filter was last changed in 2008, so I will change it this weekend and hope for the best. I knew about this going into it. Rust free Blazers are a rare sight in Mass, so whatever it needs, I'll figure it out.
I will get some better pics once its off the trailer.

very nice find, still looking for a cucv blazer to add to my collection but most of the ones i find around here are the same price as a 6x6

Ya, the Military rates the Blazers ad 3/4 tons, but they just have 10 bolts with 3:08's and a gov lock in the rear.
I have a few Dana 60/14 bolt combos out of a few M1008's & a M1028 parts trucks, but I don't know if I want the 4:56 gears in it.
If I upgrade the axles with I think I'd go with 3:73's.

I think they just use the standard 1/2 ton springs. I'll take some pics of the springs in my parts M1009 and post them.
I'm not sure how the Military comes up with the weight ratings. The M1008's & M1028's are considered a 5/4 ton trucks.

Fitz I hope I'm wrong but I doubt a fuel filter will fix your problem.
Obviously if you haven't changed it in a while doing that first is the wise play.
A clogged fuel filter will cause a diesel to fade out under load or at high speeds. It will be anything but a strong runner as you describe.
However it may be as simple as the governor sticking. At least that is what it sounds like to me from the symptoms you listed.

I got back from vacation and finally got the truck unloaded off the trailer.
I changed the fuel filter to a spin on set up with a hand primer ( same set up as on my M 1028). That didn't solve the stalling out problem.
I removed the return valve fitting off the injector pump ( with the glass ball in it). I couldn't blow air through it so I swapped in a spare valve off a parts truck. It solved the problem. Now the question is was if just a little varnish making the ball stick or is it an internal problem with the injector pump. Its running great now, if the valve clogs again, I'll do the injector pump.

This is the fitting with the glass ball in it that I swapped out. The old one wasn't filled with crud like I expected, but you could not blow air through it. You could still see through the glass ball.

Fitz you have a really cool blazer..... Like... Wicked awesome.... Haha. That would be ideal to have here in colorado for camping and fishing / hunting trips.... Fitz what is the exact tire rim combo/size you have? I'm curious

I need one of these too. What direction are you going with the. Looks like basic maintenance and wheel it forever condition right now. Whats the plan?

The short term plan is to take out the 6" lift and 35" tires a and run a 2" or 4" lift and some 33" tires.
Down the road I want to install the 14 bolt F.F 3.73 rear end from my suburban. I have a set of new GM 3.73 gears for the front 10 bolt. I have to round up the rest of the parts to swap the the front over to an 8 lug.

Yeah would you look at that! A Colorado truck! Ha! That is quite ironic and funny to me. here I am talking about how great it would be to have that truck in Colorado for the great outdoors, and it's a Colorado truck! Haha. That's pretty unique. Unique truck... So going down to 33's from the 35's? Still a beast where it sits, going to be a monster with the 14 bolt rear and a 10 bolt up front. Man winch and bumper / light setup would be trick... Ideal thing to have here in Colorado.... What's the main use of the truck going to be?

I'll use it for a daily driver in the nice weather (about 8 months a year). Where I live in Mass places to go 4 wheeling are few and far between.
I drive my M1028 daily in the nice weather, but the 4.56 gears limit its highway use. I was going to put a Gear Vendors overdrive in the M1028, but it was just as cheap to buy a M1009.
I'm not thrilled about running the 10 bolt gov lock 3.08 rear end with 35" tires.. I use the suburban as a running & driving storage container, so I have to waite a while to part it out and steal the 14 bolt out of it.
As far as the winch bumper, I think I'll leave the stock bumper on it. I do have a front mount receiver hitch that I can use my slide in Superwinch with. With the lack of places to go 4 wheeling, I don't know if I will bother installing it on the truck.

We have 3.73 14 bolt/Dana 44 set in our K-10 running 35s and I'm looking to swap out for 4.56
If you put 38s on your pickup that should help your highway speed

I don't think I'll be pulling the Dana 60 (limited slip) out of the M1028 any time soon.
As far as running 38" s on it, that's still too tall for me. My personal preference is to run a 4" lift with 33"s on short beds & blazers, and up to a 6" lift & 35"s on a long bed.
Lift laws a fairly strict in Mass. Some people may question why I bought a lifted truck to begin with. Rust is a huge problem in this part of the country. My thinking is to buy the cleanest & rust free vehicle that you can find. For me changing a lift is easier than dealing with a rot box. Its been a long time since I've seen a rust free blazer around here.
I went through the same thing years ago when I bought my 8' step side. It was a real clean truck but had a 12" lift with 44"s on it. I put a 6" lift and 35s on it.

You can run 33s with no lift
Depending on the rim and if you don't mind trimming the lower corners of the front fenders you can run a much larger tire than you think with no lift at all or a 2" lift
I hear ya with the rust
They rust here too although not as bad
We got ours from Arizona to get no rust
If you want to run a manual trans with overdrive in the pickup
The NV 3500 5 speed from a 97-07 silvarado is a bolt in swap

I have some stock rims I can run the 33"s on without a lift. I think it will look better with a small lift and some 10" wide rims.
As for rust, here in Mass it just eats these truck away. Check out my parts truck M1009. I literally ripped the tailgate off of it with my hands. Yup, the rust gets that bad.

I'm trying to keep all my questions/comments about the M1009 in this thread so its easy to follow.
The rear end I plan to use is a 14 bolt full floater from a 91 big block suburban. It has code GT4 (3.73's) and G80. Will it have a Detroit locker or a gov lock (Eaton). I haven't pulled the cover to check yet.

Where did you find these Blazers? I love those things. Years ago one of the fire dept's up in Mass had two of them. The guy was supposed to hook me up after I fixed their pickup's. Once I got their trucks fixed and converted to 12V for them they sold them to some one else :(

The clean one I found on Craigslist after it came here from Colorado. Not many clean ones left here.
The rot box one came from the local Sheriff's department auction. Its rotted to death. Typical of what you find around here. Its a cheap parts truck.
I wish I could ad your old M1028 to my collection.

There are still lots of these trucks owned by the local police, fire, and sheriff's departments.
Unfortunately these departments usually park them behind the stations when they break down and the rust away for years before they auction them off.
I've bought a few of these at local auctions, but they are just rusty parts trucks.

It rides like a lifted blazer on 35" mud tires, but it sure looks good.
