Does anyone know how to bypass the california emissions so you dont have to use them? They are not required in my state and because of complications with finding the appropriate distributor (containing both vacuum and cal emissions) i need to bypass the california emissions!

I am a bit confused with your question because you want to get rid of the cali emissions but you need to find an appropriate distributor (containing both vacuum and cal emission)

  If your vehicle is equipped with Cali emissions it should  exceed the requirements in (what state are you in)?  The only way to eliminate  the smog requirements would be to regester it as a 73

I want to get rid or override either the california emissions on my distributor or override the vacuum on my distributor. I do NOT need the California emissions bc my state does not require it.

Your question is a bit unclear.  The CA emissions controls on your '86 K10 likely include many more components than the vacuum on your distributor.  Not knowing the stock distributer type (e.g. HEI, etc.) makes it difficult to answer as well.

Here in CA, model year vehicles 1975 and earlier are exempt from emissions requires (i.e. smog checks).  So it's common for owners of exempt vehicles to pull out all of the emissions controls.  All an internal combustion engine needs to run is spark, fuel, and compression.  In a more expanded form, that means that the engine will run with simply an ignition system (coil & distributer or crank fire), fuel (pump & metering (i.e. carburetor/injection)), and compression—which is comprised of intake, cylinder quench, and exhaust (roughly).  Theoretically speaking, all intermediary systems can be removed, i.e. charcoal filters, vacuum lines etc.  Notwithstanding, the engine's operating temp still needs to be controlled and the subsequent drivetrain components such as the transmission and the truck's auxiliary components such as the brake system need to be considered when appropriate.  For example, vacuum power brakes and automatic transmissions generally require engine vacuum for their operation (approx 14 in-Hg)...     ....just some things to be aware of when altering your engine's current vacuum system.

All things considered, you're probably best off either leaving the system as it is (i.e. as it was designed to operate) or taking on a lot more work than just bypassing one vacuum line.  Unless someone has managed to do it already and has the answer for you.

What is wrong with yours?

It may be more affordable and less of a headache to rebuild the one you have.

ok I know i am asking what seems to be stupid questions , but you are saying both vacuum and cali emissions. What part of that dist do you believe are "cali emissions". I am sure you can find a vac advance hei and the ign modual , none of that is "cali emissions".
California emissions exceed most requirements of other states, but those are the standards that you must meet in california. Those standards do not apply in other states. I think that you cannot find the dist you are looking for because there is no such an item

i got a question, do you have emission testing in the state you live in? the reason i ask is cause my 91 v3500 is a cal truck with a cat. that is the only emissions it has and according to my state (maryland) if it came with it it still has to have it. and if i didnt have a cat. they would of looked in their book to see if its required or not

Like I said. Louisiana has no emissions requirements. I need to bypass the California emissions plug. I found out this distributor is part #1103465 and is made for a 5.0L 305. I replaced this engine with a 350 but it will not start without the California emissions plug. I need to know how to bypass it. it is legal to remove it if I am registering the truck in Louisiana.

I believe you are saying that you have an ESC distributor with the 4pin plug on the back? those typically don't have vacuum.  Do you have any of the other ESC modules still? computer controlled carb? if not, you can merely put a new non-esc HEI distributor in ($50 on eBay) run a vacuum line to the advance and re-time it.

There is also a wiring hack to use the ESC and bypass the computer control of it, read this:

Now, if you still have the Computer Controlled Carb, or are TBI, then you have a whole lot more issues to work out.

there is a 7 prong plug on one side and the normal plug on the other and also a vacuum. like I said part #1103465

Yeah,we get it...."it will not start"....some more constructive details would serve you and this thread better....everyone here is trying to help. A re-read of this thread shows that there is nothing"obvious" about the details of your problem....all of the guys replying are still trying to figure it out.  So far Timthescarrd has come the closest to troubleshooting with the limited info you've given, Cal2200. You should be grateful..... 

My advice at his point has nothing to do with your distributor. ..Help the forum help you instead of repeating the same thing over and over.

in maryland there is no emission requirements also but you cant alter how it came. now this might be just for the exhaust part idk about anything else before.
maybe im taking your typing as a tude but yeah like fx said we're trying to help and get as much info as we can from you. but this situation kind of reminds me of the show "shark tank" and cause of that im out

Its a tad bit aggravating when people act like you havent thought of just leavung it off or unplugging it. I know its possible to bypass this system. I know its legal to remove this ive checked. Also i keep repeating mtself because if someone says try just unplugging it or not using it all i can do is repeat myself by saying ive tried it and thr truck with not start without it. This distributor is only made for a 305 and i noe have a 350 and would prefer to replace this distributor with one rated for a 350. There are no 350 distributors containing both.

Without seeing your setup and from reading and re-reading your posts you are probably not going to find a solution without further understanding what others are saying.  First off there is really no difference in "ratings" if a 305 versus a 350 Distributor.  It only differs as to what curve, what type of advance mechanisms and whether it is for ESC or not.  You could drop a 1970 points distributor from any small block and you could get it going.  Maybe you are possibly overthinking this.  Sorry if you are getting frustrated...

The problem you're facing is that the '86 engine has a California feedback emissions system.  Fuel and ignition timing are managed by an onboard computer (ECM).  To accomplish your goal of removing the emissions system would require replacing the carburetor and substituting a mechanical distributor, such as one of those linked in the prior post.  In addition, you would need to remove the ECM, catalytic converter, etc, etc, etc.  Quite an endeavor.

I understand these kind of problems can be frustrating.  So first and most importantly,

is this TBI or Carb? If carb, is it computer controlled?

As far as the distributor, no you can't just unplug it, but by cutting and splicing some of the wires to the computer you can trick it into running without the computer.

"First thing to do is unhook the spark control computer lead from the pink wire and hook the pink wire directly to the dist. cap.  Make sure you plug it into the cap at the BAT terminal.  The second thing is to locate the 4 wire connector that feeds into the ignition module.  There's a brown (D), green (C), white (B), and black (A) wire there.  The letters in () are on the black clip that the wires come out of.  You cut the green (C) and black (A) wires between this clip and where they go into the distributor.  Then all you need to do is solder the 2 cut leads from the dist/ignition module together, i.e. the green and black ones"

Or replace the distributor with a non-ESC

I'm trying to replace this distributor with one that only has vacuum and is meant for a 350. So, it wont have the plug for me to solder the wires into. I will only have the plug coming from the firewall. And mine is meant for a 305, plus I don't want to run a brand new engine with an old distributor.

You have an ESC distributor with vacuum advance like in the attached pic. You want to run a standard vacuum advance HEI Distributor and a non computer controlled carburetor correct?

So purchase a new vacuum advance HEI distributor for a SBC
Purchase and Edlebrock 1406 electric choke carburetor

Get some wire, solder and heat shrink to make a few simple electrical connections ie female spade for electronic choke, distributor coil wire connector and then adjust your ignition timing, tune the carburetor.

Remove the exhaust emissions controls and plug the evap canister and you will have bypassed all California emissions controls

Vile, because it's a California truck a 1986 K10 could easily be an LS9 350 with feedback carburetor.  My recollection isn't totally untarnished, but isn't ESC controlled by the ECM on CCC engines?  And, will the ESC bypass still work under those circumstances without setting a code?

BD I didn't put much effort into reading this post since it's missing a lot of information but I thought he said it was a 305 with ESC w/ vacuum advance and he replaced it with a 350. Maybe I read it wrong but I'm not going to look back. Either way I'm under the impression he is looking to run a non emissions controlled truck, no? Got projects to do and progress to make.... have a good night
