Title: 1976 Chevy K10 350 runs like crap after it ran out of gas
Post by: Kimper on June 04, 2015, 06:51:49 pm
I got a 76 Chevy I inherited. It was restored back in 06 with a new engine and transmission and a full frame removal and sand blasting. I just got it running last week after it sat around for about years. I only put 5 gallons of gas in it and it fired right up but needed some carb adjustments. After getting the carb adjusted it drove mint and I drove it around for a few days with no problems. Well yesterday I ran out of gas and after I put gas in it it runs like crap. It bearly idles and when I do get it to idle it seems ruff. When I go to drive it it almost instantly starts bogging and wants to die. My question is does this seem like a clogged jet?? Not sure if it sucked some stuff out of the tank when it was low and it got to the carb and plugged it up or if it's something different.. Any help would be great..

sounds like a clogged fuel filter. what carb is on it and do you see and fuel filters inline

As stated probably sucked a bunch of crap into filters and the carb.

It's a edelbrock 1405 and I pulled the inline fuel filter out and was able to blow through it.

Pull the airhorn off of the carburetor and clean out the fuel bowls and jets. These work great for sucking all of the crap out of there http://www.harborfreight.com/brake-fluid-bleeder-92924.html

I just got it running last week after it sat around for about years.

How many years did it sit?

Old gas, after sitting for years, turns to a varnish. Once you get the carb cleaned up, you might add a see through filter (if you haven't already) just to monitor for chunks of varnish.

Got the carb apart and found a bunch of saw dust in it, the previous owner must has worked with wood while rebuilding the truck. Cleaned it out and she runs 100 times better now but I can't seem to get it to smooth Putin the low end. When I am driving about 10 mph and bairly on the gas she like to shurge a little. Pretty sure it's a carb issue but not sure where to start

I bought a vacuum gauge yesterday to do some carb tuning and it turns out my passenger side idle mixture screw was inoperative. Well a quick blast of air and we were back in business  and I must say tunning the idle with A vacuum gauge is got the be the best thing ever. This truck hasn't ran this good probably in years. Everything is smooth from idle to full rpms. If you don't have one go get one..

I just rebuilt my carb and haven't been able to get it *quite right*.  I may have to take you up on your advice and splurge on a vacuum gauge.
