Title: Dash light indicator for High beam brights
Post by: Thundergun on June 11, 2015, 09:36:47 pm
Hey guys. Looking for some help getting my in dash high beam indicator light to work.

The high beams on the truck work.

The high beam indicator on the dash does not. I pulled the dash panels off and got to the indicator light. The bulb itself is good. it was in it's little plastic socket. BUT there was NO harness going to the socket!

okay so WTH. I poked around best i could back there looking for it. Pretty sure it's non existent. There were several open wires just hanging around back there. its also hard as heck to get a good look back there. No space for working.

The truck is highly used. It's an 85 k10. says it has an 87 engine fuel injected.

Anyone have any advice on how in the world i might start to figure this out? it won't pass inspection until this gets fixed so i can't get it registered! Help!

Any idea how much a mechanic might charge to fix this for me?

Thanks!!

it works by a printed circuit board where the bulb turns into place. one side will lead to a ground the other will lead to the high beam wire on the cluster pigtail. sometimes its a poor connection and a simple slight twist will let it work again. also try switching bulbs around with another known working bulb. if it still doesnt work take a volt meter and follow the circuit board to the appropriate wire in the pigtail and make sure your getting 12v to that wire when the high beams are on

THanks Irish. That explains why i didn't see a pigtail harness going to the socket. Much appreciated. Guess i know what i'm doing this weekend.

I had a stubborn one on a past squarebody.  I had the dash apart so many times I lost count.  I'd get it working put the dash back together and 2 days later, nothing.  I ended changing out the whole cluster.  Must have been an intermittent connection that I couldn't see.

i know on my 91 if i turn the bulbs all the way so they lock in place it some wont work. so i had to turn them back right before the "click" into place for them to work
