Title: 1980 SWB K10 Build
Post by: bowmank10 on June 17, 2015, 06:33:00 pm
Hello, I am new to the site and this is the build thread for my 1980 k10. I originally picked up this truck for $1500 when I was 14. The truck had sat dismantled in a guy's garage for 15+ years.

Here is what it looked like when I unearthed it.(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/339525499d42c26044a3e6b2b6bf152d.jpg)
First I stripped it down to bare frame and axles and had it sandblasted.(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/7646a5283cabfeff11b4af129eebda54.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/23ff27cb817379e0338d2ca0cb9b5841.jpg)
Next I brushed the frame with POR15 and put in a 4in. Tuff Country lift. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/4ceb11470a8207dfaf9d0161589583d2.jpg)

After completing the frame, the drive train was next. The PO had dropped in 4 bolt main 350 supposedly from a wrecked short bus with 6000 miles on it.
I slapped in a Jeg's 488/510, 292/310 cam, a performer high rise intake, and hooker competition headers. Nothing to crazy, just enough to get me around until the day it gets an LS
Here's what it looked like before.(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/bdc2ef96fc20d7a12c17a33db0edebae.jpg)
And after some paint and chrome
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/7d28558b8136c7b163cb930f90c9e79d.jpg)
The PO also kept the TH350 tranny and NP205 transfer case.

Here it is all settled in the frame. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/a1da69c183b29ccd9581b39b5bf2eea8.jpg)-
After all the plumbing on the frame was gone through and replaced, next came the body...
The body was rough, very rough. The original cab was GONE. However the PO had also picked up a 1986 2wd cab from down in Texas.
Here is the old cab and the new cab together(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/d2979c7dde3d6b8f784cf94a1ce626ea.jpg)
Because the cab was originally 2wd, I had to cut out the low hump and replace it with a high hump as seen in picture.(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/8c391502ab5885b3cb7be3f4f4ddaa84.jpg)
Here is the cab all primed up
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/755a479c6e760be085a5c81125be9388.jpg)
And sitting on the frame

Next came the hard part....deciding paint color. I spent months throwing color choices around in my head and eventually decided on a two tone Arrival Blue and White. Here's what it looked like on the sample panel(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/afbc66aaa873ec7a2a18fa81f3711779.jpg)
Here is how we decided on which blue to go with
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/a590010d49545e6396748be03dd8c508.jpg)

My dad sprayed the interior, firewall, and door jams... Couldn't be happier with the color, looks awesome in the sun
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/b5df59d64ff73ca349073410a9466abe.jpg)
I have been spending the past few weeks redoing the wiring harness and cleaning up miscellaneous interior parts.

I also ordered a 2inch cowled hood, a front fender, and a door and was very impressed on how everything arrived and looked.
Here is the hood
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/17/799901616a06b1f4d4fdb9de9cba6a51.jpg)

Hoping to have it drivable on the road or done by late August.

Here is how she currently sits

More updates to come.... Thanks

It's been a while since I have made a an update post on the K10. Since the last post I have been slowly working on fixing the bed floor and cleaning\painting interior parts. Also the two brand new boxsides I ordered showed up at my front door
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/22/dae585b3e5171133704f9944f37cf0d4.jpg) (Please excuse the light sanding on the right boxside)
Because the cross sills on the floor of the bed were rotted out,I had a friend bend me up some new ones.
Finally replaced my ugly burgundy seat cover with a black velour one.
And here is the dashpad and trim after I painted it
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/22/87d42af81866336d669b7a4c0d211a1f.jpg)

And that's about it for now... Hoping to have the bed floor completed and entire box in primer, and interior completed within the next few weeks.
Thanks,

Finished blocking finally, and got everything taped off. Finished painting the bottom of the bed floor
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/22/aa56eff4e9d837ada081233e1ba68f05.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/22/e075bec57885d12d4941edbad4ba97c3.jpg)

Finally sprayed the blue, took 3 color coats and 1 final. The blue looks really bland without the clear but layed quite well.(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/22/be6d953ab0791cb1ad5767e09809dc68.jpg)
Hopefully finish taping off the white sometime this week and then spraying white and then finally clear this weekend😎

Got a lot done on the k10 in the past week.
Finished spraying the white two tone
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/4ac62da7f009dc0549fefe5e2b591e52.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/f7bbcad28d67d0dbab11013540e00188.jpg)
Here it is with just basecoat sitting outside, the blue really pops
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/402d9d3a886b65b33b4b4c706998cf65.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/2e1320f54621aa2eb4924fc93d53b277.jpg)
And after clear coat, the blue and white looks even better than I planned on
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/df64b49bae345f2e4c46bdfb1840a939.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/51c0f4f636d8773e0227bb0198caedfb.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/4e1465d6c87b030ce8e47e832e02ad5e.jpg)
Here is how the truck sits all together with her new shoes
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/8c334415760b282c1c2b4ce7f3c59010.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02/28/08c639eee7771c59ff20140a67b04eb4.jpg)

Today was the first time I have seen the truck all one complete color and I could be happier with how it turned out. Can't wait to finish it.

I'm more jealous, because thats the paint scheme i was going for, blue/white two tone...no trim!! Dang!!!

Couple things:

Does the trim tend to hold water, causing rust rot, etc.

I have been told you have to remove fenders in order to install/remove emblems. Is that right?

I don't plan on driving the truck during the winter so rust shouldn't be an issue.
I expect the trim will hold water but instead of drilling holes and running screws to attach the trim, I will be using 3m tape.
For the emblems on the fender I will be finding some newer style Silverado emblems to cover the holes. Any suggestions on such emblems?

Perhaps you can use the same 3m double sided tape to attach?

GM now uses 3M double sides automotive tape for all of its exterior emblems. Works great. No reason at all you can use that.

All bolts except for 2 little spot welds on the back by the tailgate where the bed post connects to the bed floor.

Well, been a process of putting back together and finishing touches in the past month. All that is left is exhaust and a few bugs to work out, other than that, my two year project has finally come to a close. Can't wait to get it back on the road.
