Title: 86 c10 frame up build
Post by: jeff.severs on July 05, 2015, 09:52:42 am
Hello all, first post so let me ease into it. I have an 86 c10 custom. Bought it about 4 months ago to start my build. 305/350 combo with 3.08 rear end i believe. All gaskets shot, suspension bushing and shocks shot, tranny leaking, idling rough, 2 bolts holding the bed on. Perfect candidate for a 90% completely new parts frame up build.

So far i have stripped the truck down to the frame. Leaf spring bolts and u bolts were horribly seized and actually were the only bolts that had to be cut off.

I have just finished wire wheeling and paint the frame and leaf springs with eastwood rust encapsulator paint, with dupicolor engine black gloss. I decided to paint everything with the same top coat to match, frame up. Next on the list is to clean, wire wheel, and paint the rearend and driveshaft.

Parts ordered already and should be arriving soon are as follows:
73-87chevytrucks dual exhaust crossmember
Prothane complete bushing set from azproperformance
Upper control arms from rock auto
Lower control arms, rear shackles, and all new suspension hardware
McGaughys 4.5/6 lowering kit from azproperformance minus the spindles

Future parts list is extensive but includes:
McGaughys big brake kit-theres the 2.5" drop spindles!
New rear brake components
New brake lines and prop valve
New fuel tank and fuel lines
260 hp 350 with edelbrock intake and carb
New th350 tranny from monster transmission
New radiator and dual electric fans
All new hoses and wire looms
20" american racing wheels
New front clip set
New front bumper

As soon as i have time at home i will post a few pictures and keep this thread updated with my slow, but rewarding progress. Thanks!

I rocked the cab back and forth on the frame and got it this far while I was waiting on a buddy to arrive.

Control arms upper and lower, dual exhaust transmission crossmember from 73-87chevytrucks, all new suspension bolts and hardware.
Going to fedex today and picking up my bushing set and the lowering components should be on their way any day. Ill be painting the leaf springs, rear end, and driveshaft this weekend. Thanks for looking!!

WOW - that takes real guts -

I took the other approach - fix/ replace only what breaks off or down - but I needed to get truck up and running

good luck - looks like u have it laid out

Thank you, i just want to know i can get in it and drive. Ill torque every bolt. See everything going back on. And it will be in the "rat rod" category i guess without the high performance engine. Im not doing much to the exterior.
Update:
Rear suspension is one c-notch away from being complete. Had to get bolts for lower eye on rear springs bc the bolts were too big for the supplied bushing and sleeve. Rear end oil is changed with valvoline 75w90 and a new gasket with rtv. Will post a few pics tomorrow.
Near future:
Unbolt transmission from engine and send it to a local rebuild shop, figured there wasnt going to be much hp so a stock rebuild should suffice.
Finish other c notch install
Decide on mcgaughys big brake kit for front or just buy the lowering spindles and buy new stock disc brake components
Save for new engine!
