Title: 700r4 question
Post by: johnboy3927 on July 07, 2015, 05:55:45 pm
I have an 87 chevy with tbi injection but am switching to a carb setup. Do I still need computer controls for my 700r4 tranny? Or will it operate without? All there is on it is a 4 pin plug.

im not 100% sure i know someone on here does know. i can tell you this the 700r4 came out in 82 with no computers. the 4l60e (93+) needs a computer to shift the only thing you have to do is rig up a converter switch for the 700r4

this (http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/lockup.htm) might help
and THIS (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,7310.msg42965.html#msg42965) might help even more

The 700r4 uses the TV cable for shifting and the computer for the LockUp Torque Converter.  When switching to a carb, make sure you get the TV cable hooked up at the right angle and adjusted properly.  You could run it without a computer but it wont go into lockup mode, which could lead to pre-mature failure of the transmission.

You can make you're own lockup switch by following the links irish posted, or there are some companies like TCI and B&M that make kits you can install.
