I am planning to repaint the front bumper on my 77 k10. Once the chrome started to peel the previous owner rattle canned white over it. I have most of the paint removed, it has some surface rust but still has some chrome in a few shots. My question is what would be the best primer for this, use a self etching to help stick to the chrome? Or use a rust reformer? Or something entirely different.
I am planning to rattle can it. What would you guys recommend?

Welcome. You could probably use a heavy grit sand paper for steel, scrape it up nice a good, then use a finer grit paper over that, then wash it down, make sure it's clean and dry, use a self etching primer or primer for use on steel only. Apply as directed, then the same with a final paint color, for steel only, apply as directed.
Really all your doing is cutting up the chrome surface so that the paint will stick and cutting the rust spots off with the heavy grit paper. The finer grit paper is to make everything smooth and mostly even, that way your finished product is smooth and clean and looks good. Otherwise it could look like you just rattle canned over a piece of poo haha.

I have taken a grinder to the chrome and it seemed to polish it more then scuff it but I must've been been using soft of a grit. I do plan to take my time on this for the best result. I'm looking to reverse the ratty ranch truck process from the previous owner.

Your welcome. Be careful with the grinder tho, to light won't do anything, do hard and you will get low spots in the steel, they will be visible once painted. You could use a wire wheel disc in place of the grinder and heavy sand paper.

When I paint over chrome I grind the chrome with an air grinder, 24 grit disc. Then I prime with self etching primer, & 4 to 5 coats of high build urethane primer. Sand the primer with 400 grit, wash with prep solvent, paint.

Use and direct to metal primer ,sand the bumper with 500 grit . Been painting for 7 years

I use my sandblaster on anything chrome that I want to paint. Works awesome.
