Title: body shop quote?

Hi. If anyone has had professional bodywork done to their truck or are in the business, your help would be great. I brought my truck to a body shop for a quote to get all the rust and dents out of my truck as well as weld up the trim holes and drip rail holes. The guy told me he wanted to replace both fenders, bed sides, cab corners, doors and rocker panels. That alone will take care of all my rust and dent problems. Then he will put the whole truck into primer. (not ready to have it painted yet). The quote he gave me was $5000.00 with $2000.00 being labor! Am i being ripped off? I have no idea because i have never done this before and i have not priced out parts if i were to by them myself. Please let me no if this is a reasonable quote.

That is a lot of cash.  To be honest I do all my own work, so, I wouldn't know if it was a good bid or not.  I would take the truck to a couple of other places just to compare the price.  If you have to spend that much it would be wise to shop around anyway.  Know what I mean?  Plus, if they want to replace fenders...etc., ask if their giving you a quote on aftermarket or original.  I know the fenders on my '77 run about $300 original and less than a $100 for aftermarket.  All in all I guess I'm saying "watch your #$%"

I'd suggest if you do replace the pannels that you do it yourself. I'm not sure but if there is a macco in your area get a quote from them. otherwise here is an estamate in prices.

paint/primer/clear coat would be around $40-60 per quart
requires 2 gallons of each i think for a whole vehicle

labor would be anywhere from $20-40 per hour

to sand a whole truck before the primer would take 4 hours or so. (unless you get the new body parts)

after the primer another 2-3 hours of sanding.

painting would take 2-3 hours.

this is just nwhat i have found. shopa around northern wisconsin are on the cheaper side to my quotes

That sounds awful high to me. I had mine repainted last summer professionally. I had a hole on the fender filled, the hole where the hood oernament was, removed the body trim, and removed the studs holding the aluminum tailgate piece on. The cab corners and rocker panels were replaced and all of my small dents and little rust spots were filled in. Everything was painted up to the door weather stripping (didnt have the inside of the cab painted). Before I took the truck to get painted I replaced one of the doors and the bed with ones that weren't eaten through. I also removed all the trim, lights, bumpers, and other stuff on the outside that I could remove and re-install myself. This all cost me $1600.

I had a dent fixed, cab corners, door sills and door skins.

sorta cleaned and painted.

$2250 Canadian. place was not clean. painted thin. a lil rust starting some paint pressure washed off.

It had new fenders and a southern box

had a 305
have a 357
want a Big Block

I think i am going to take it back home to CA over the summer to a place called one day paint. They are a chain body shop and are in between an earl scheib or maaco paint job and a professional body shop. I got a quote for a previous vehicle for $750 for paint and clear including door jambs and under hood w/out body work.

My 81 was just repainted it had rust on both doors both quarter panels and a  little in the bed. The guy spent 2 months on my truck and it came out great.  He block sanded it shaved mirrors, drip rail,and  metal rivets underneath rear window. Also shaved tailgate and handle  and welded in the steel rollpan I bought also shaved 2 gas doors.  He did it 4 $2100 cash (no receipt) but anyone who wants 2 see it email me. Its painted in 2003 PPG midnight blue same color as 2003 midnight blue new trucks. I saw a customers 72 chevy truck and inquired about it at my job site the paint was in great shape, turns out the paint job was 7 years old. Thats how I found out about this guy.
