Title: leaking between transmission and transfer case
Post by: jarhead76 on July 16, 2015, 08:53:16 pm
ok i have a 1990 suburban 4x4 with a rebuilt 700r4. i just got the trany rebuilt, in and on the road 2 weeks ago. and last night noticed a i had fluid coming from in between my transmission and my transfer case.   i don't know transmissions really at all. I'm amusing there is a seal on the out put shaft of the trany. and i heard something about putting a gasket between the trany and transfer case. will some one please set me straight on how to fix this

there should be something (ie gasket between the transfer case and adapter and o-ring between the transmission and transfer case). but rtv will work just fine and i would clean it all off make sure all bolts are in place and tight and drive it for a little bit and see if its still leaking cause wind can and will push fluid all around. and maybe verify its the adapter and which side that is leaking and not something else on the transmission.

first off sorry i took so long to respond. but yes the bolts on the t-case were loose. witch makes we wonder if that was the reason the tans. went out in the first place . because i have never touched those bolts till after i discovered the leek.  thank you for the help.

if it ran out of fluid then yes it would play a role in why the trans burnt up. but its not to burn up just from leaking

For what it's worth my transmission also leaks between the transmission and transfer case, but never did before I had it rebuilt and I never had a gasket or gasket material between them in the fifteen years I owned the truck but then again I got a dumb th 400 with a 27 spline output shaft. Go figure th 400 is supposed to be 32 spline, though they did make a th 375 but was a 2 wheel drive car trans that looked like a 400. I'd say rear output seal or something is cracked or broken.

your superposed to have fluid there. there is a drain hole for it to drain back into the transmission.
