Hi fellas sorry I haven't posted sooner I've been real busy this summer with work and getting the little ones ready for school and trying to get some GMC time in :-\ Anyways, nice meeting y'all guys and I'll have pics of the tear down some what step by step. In case any of yall experts see something u recommend I do differently, keep in mind tho that this is a budget build so I don't plan to dump to much cash into this one. Oh my name is Pete btw! 8)
-
You can be resourceful these days with Craigslist, eBay etc. 74 GMC is my favorite :)
-
So....I own a 1974 GMC 1500, I traded a 98 envoy that ran like crap for it. I figured if I was gonna work on something it would b something I'm going to keep. Doesn't make sense to dump a bunch of cash into something your gonna give up later down the road. Anyways, I had my wonderful wife help me pull the pick up home :o which went good then pulled out the wrenches and had it started in about half an hr. After getting it started I took it out for a spin which was really rough but with a lot of power. Park it after my little fun then dug in deeper to find out what was roaring underneath the hood. Pulled numbers look them up and came out to a big block 455! This made me really super excited! (http://i.imgur.com/TPZKaYV.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/jrQXp9K.jpg)
-
Welcome dude it looks good!
i bet that big block would love a 4 barrel
-
Oh yea! It'll also like a brand new cam to make her sound even more like a beast with that 4 barrel!
-
Plan was to just redo gaskets give it a tune up some body work then get er on the road but things actually looked a lot worse than what I thought so this'll b an off frame restore job. Took more pics of the block, one of my favorites is the 455 stamp on the bottom of the block just verifing it's a 455. (http://i.imgur.com/uooexXZ.jpg)(http://i.imgur.com/IsT7zAw.jpg) I also noticed that the pulleys weren't in line so I'll b doing some surgical work to this one. (http://i.imgur.com/jnjgvgq.jpg)
-
Engine was the first thing to be torn in to. Pulled all lines and electrical wires from it and got everything ready to pull out the block. Which was NOT easy by yourself! Got it done and put up underneath my car port where it'll sit and wait for some tlc. But first thing to get a make over is the frame and suspension to sit my clean fresh 455 on to ;D

Ok guys so here's a question for y'all professionals that know about engines and what they'll fit into. So when I took the engine bolts off I noticed a lot of play and on one side the nut was missing on the other side of the bolt. So it was a good idea to pull the block cause of how much play was there. Question I have is will this 455 work in the gmc correctly? From searching the Web it says I have a 1972 pontiac 455 non HO series out of a trans am. I'm not 100% sure on the trans am part but the other info is right on. I'm just hoping that some spacers and and new motor mounts will fix the problem.

You may have to wait a bit on your answer. Stands to reason if it was in a 73-87 Chevy, GMC frames are the same. The engine frame mounts will have to transferred but should be fine. We see Olds 455, Cadillac 472's but not seen a Pontiac in a squarebody truck.

Yea when I look it up it spoke a lot about the old 455 that y I thought I should ask, but when I took the motor mount apart everything seemed to fit correctly it was just worn out and one side was missing the nut that held the long bolt that went on the inside of the mount. I'll wait to see what others have to say tho also. Thanks for the help bud!

So after pulling the block next will b body parts. I'm going sandblast everything and throw some vht roll bar and chassis paint. Not gonna do anything special, just moog ball joints energy suspension mounts and control arm bushing. I'll get more into that when I get to that point. -
So here's the main reason y I decided to frame off resto this one. That chunk of dirt in my hands is just a small piece of what's to b cleaned and blasted. (http://i.imgur.com/vIJV27w.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/DAKspgU.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/NUn6inb.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/8giH4VO.jpg)
Everything strip off of the frame and sorry no pics of taking off the cab my phone was acting weird or it just may b the SD card. If i pull em up I'll most def post em.
-
Got a couple pics of the cab removal. So I basically got a couple of 2 bies nailed em together then put it on top of my cherry picker then fed it on the inside of the cab to where it sat balanced then started to jack er up. Got it high enough to pull the picker straight out then sat the cab down on blocks. Oh and believe me when I say it's a whole lot easier said than done! (http://i.imgur.com/VUzz1rV.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/d0gLxS0.jpg)
Oh another thing I forgot to mention. That come along u see attached to the picker is to help me pull that big boy off that frame since I'm doing by myself.
-
I've taken them off that way by myself but always had 4 guys to put them back on.
-
I'll definitely be getting some help to put the cab and bed back on. Especially after all the work that I'll b putting into it, I don't want to chance anything
-
Welcome from a misplaced Texan residing in North Carolina! The build looks like it's progressing well. I tore my 74 and 80 apart myself with a cherry picker. A 4x4 post cut to fit, 2 eye bolts, and a good chain was all it took to get the beds swapped. If you're careful there's no reason it can't be done by yourself. The cab is another beast all together. Good luck and keep us posted.
-
Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while guys. But it doesn't mean that I haven't been doing anything. I've put lots of work into the 74 and it won't b long b4 I'm getting the engine on the frame for easier working on. I have lots of pics and we'll b posting them soon.
-
So with removing the engine and front end made things a lot easier to remove. First was the fuel and brake lines then I'll focus on removing the front suspension all in one piece being that it's held to the frame by 7 nuts and bolts. All this will b replace also. (http://i.imgur.com/uFh3yRe.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/6QFKs6n.jpg)
-
Front suspension removed and put up for now to begin blasting and painting the frame with vht chassis and roll bar black. So for the stuff has work great for me. Just gotta follow instructions and you'll b ok.

So with the frame started with a few coats of paint I started on the front cross member. Got it all torn apart and ready for blasting. I also included a couple of pics to show what it look like b4 blasting and paint. Man I really love the way these parts look after being shot with sand, but that matte black doesn't look all that bad also! 8)
