Title: Exhaust manifold leak - L6 integral head
Post by: 79scott on July 24, 2015, 08:13:43 pm
I need to get the exhaust manifold off of my L6 intregal head motor From underneath the motor I only see two bolts attached to the exhaust manifold. I assume the bolts to remove the manifold are located on top of the intake and run down through it and into the exhaust manifold?

 Thanks

Correct.  The 13 exhaust manifold retaining bolts drop down through the cylinder head from above.  See the attached images below and the 1979 Service Manual page 6A1-10 (Pg 471), "EXHAUST MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY - INTEGRATED HEAD" (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/techinfo/7387CKMans//Service/ST_330_79_1979_Chevrolet_Light_Truck_Service_Manual.pdf#page=471) plus Fig 6A1-9 at the top of the succeeding page.

Thanks. Any idea where I could source an exhaust manifold? Not having much luck

Doing a brief google search I don't see any.  It may be easier to do a V-8 swap if you can't find a replacement.

Does the integral head exhaust manifold have "donut" gaskets between the manifold and exhaust Y pipe? The reason I aks is one of the areas around one of the connections was leaking pretty bad. I removed the Y pipe and it looked like there are donuts there but heck if I can get them off. OR is the exhaust manifold connection point tapered to fit the Y pipe?

there is a donut between the manifold and pipe where the 3 bolts are at. the donut might be gone completely and all you see is the lip that holds the donut in place. post a picture if you want

picture of the outlet side of the exhaust manifold. I can feel a seam or lip.

Looking from the ground up

This should be the gasket you need. My above post I missed the L6 part I'm used to working on the v8s that's why I mentioned 3 bolts

alright, I have all but one of the bolts removed. Any suggestions of how to remove the bolt that is underneath the manifold closest to the engine block right above the motor mount?

Manifold is off and there are no exhaust gaskets......maybe I should have been more clear. My truck has the manifold that has two exhaust outlets. it appears to me that the manifold is tapered to accept the exhaust pipe flange? is that correct?

If it is as you describe then yes the pipe should seal against the manifold.
