Title: GAS TANK REPLACEMENT
Post by: 1979mmx350 on August 11, 2015, 02:06:18 am
How hard is it to install a tank myself? What types of replacement parts might I need to fit it? I got metal tank with a hole in it that I wanna throw in eventually as my right tank leaks something awful if I fill it up.

It should be a straight forward swap. Spray some pb blaster on your bolts/nuts so they freely come loose. As long as your sending unit was still working then the only thing you might consider replacing is the rubber fuel hose on your pickup and return lines.

Check the metal straps, they may need to be replaced. It's hard to get at the lines and wires. Don't tighten the straps until you have the brackets bolted to the frame. There is an access hole thru the frame to tighten them.

You may also consider replacing the antisqueek pads. I used a rubber sheet and just cut out strips but anything that isn't metal to metal contact would be good.
Especially ially where the straps contact the tank. They. An and will rub through the tank if you do not correct the issue

Those are all good suggestions.  I just dropped mine to replace fuel sender.  I replaced the metal straps and also used some rubber sheeting for anti squeak.  My suggestion would be to make sure you have a good ground connection while you are at it.  That's half the trouble with sending units...

A brand new tank is not expensive from rock auto
And you'd be surprised how much trash and dirt is in an old one

Get a bunch of ball bearings or nuts and bolts and toss some liquid in the tank and just shake it round.
