Title: Under bed spare tire carrier, make one??
Post by: philo_beddoe on August 24, 2015, 11:47:52 am
From a piece of steel, is it possible to make or fabricate one of those supports for the spare tire. I have the hardware, i just need that lower support plate.  I cant find one to purchase, anyone ever make one? They dont look to technical.

Should be easy enough.  I will take a picture of the one under my 86 as a reference.

Good pictures! Thanks.  Doesnt look complicated. I have never had one, i wonder how the rim rests on those two center steel supports?  That might be the tuff part.

Rim is centered, doesn't rest on anything.  Here is the spare under my 84C10

Well, backing up a little, Zieg posted some good pics. It looks like three pieces, two long studs and the carrier bar.  Is that right??

...and the clamping nut.  The OE passenger side nut consists of a stamped steel frame with a tapered seat and threaded nylon core.  The stamped nut has a large, open eye to accept a big screwdriver or the tapered end of a lug wrench for loosening and tightening (see Zieg's image).  The tapered seat of the nut engages an enlarged hole through the end of the carrier.

The driver side bolt has a standard hex head and uses a torque prevailing lock nut to maintain its height adjustment.  The passenger side bolt has a large rectangular flag under its head that keeps the bolt from pulling through the slotted lower frame rail flange, but also prevents the bolt from spinning while tightening/loosening the clamping nut.

Okay, is this stupid thing on right??!!!  Yes those big shiny bolts are "spacers", needed to level out.  I have ocd, needs to be perfectly straight and level. Looks good.  I keep my tire the other way, outside down, so I can check the air pressure from time to time

Ok, thanks! Yeah maybe i'll flip it, plus it will look better as the other side is factory white like the other rims and the ww tire.

This system is not the best for a spare tire. I think GM could have come up with something a little better. Oh well, it is what it is.  It holds nice and tight anyway.  Thanks again appreciate the quick feedback.

Looks pretty good. Remember tho, for the day, this setup was pretty handy. The idea was that you lowered the one side and then slide it around so the tire is at an angle. That way you could pick it up and slide it off and out. My worked fine before I took it out.

Yup, should be fine, looks much better now that fliped the tire around.   And while i was at it, i installed my new dash pad, feul guage and in dash mono speaker.   Sure glad that dash came out ok, was nervous it wasnt gonna fit right.

Looks good, I wish the underside of my truck was that clean!

Seems like your all set, the only thing i can think of is installing an anti vibration nut with nylon insert on the non removable side, but with your multiple nut setup you should be fine

The underside is what most folks neglect the most.  You need to spend time down there.  Any surface rust should be cleaned and apply type of rust reformer, then a heavy duty black paint, then keep it lightly coated with blaster lubricant, same co. as pb blaster. WD 40 works good, but wont hold up long in the winter.  Right about this time of year i give it a heavy coating for the winter, like a whole gallon.  I spray it using a heavy duty spray bottle.  And then lightly hit it all winter. It should never be dry down there, water will start to oxidize.  And ya gotta spray every nook and cranny, LOOK for areas to hit, use a flashlight.  For paint i use rustoleum truck bed coating and rustoleum rubberized undercoating.

I bought Fluid Film at the local NAPA (never saw it before moving to Kansas), they said that local farmers use this a lot for corrosion protection.  It seems to work pretty well, it hasn't softened or affected automotive enamel on hinges I've used it on and has had good staying power.

Fluid film is superior! I would drive my truck in a swimming pool full of that stuff and let it sit for a month if i could!!!   Fluid film has one problem,,,it's expensive!!!   NAPA does sell it by the gallon and you can use a spray wand and air compressor to apply very effectively many coates, so thats not so bad.
