Sounds like my kind of church...there's not a lot of that up here. There's a spot behind the justchevytrucks.com/lsx4u.com place but that's about it.

fans.

everyone had fun my first run i didnt make it very far only 86' i was upset and embarrassed lol. my "friend" in the ford made it 104' with the same size tires. so i couldnt let that happen. as soon as i hit the mud i realize my mistake i kept it in 4 hi. when we're out mudding around the farm 4 hi is ok cause its sandy not really much mud. here it was thick and this being my first time i made a rookie mistake. so the next time i put her in 4 low and ran her like i never had before and made it through, learned some tricks on the way to the finish. we all loaded up on the trailer under our own power so nobody broke anything. i dont have one complaint about how anything was ran but next time i might get my truck tagged to i can run in the class with the ford cause we all ran in the same pit. and this place let us run multiple times so i got some of my pride back and not only beat the ford but made it through the pit

this was the church's first time but they had some good people (some of my redneck buddys who like to mud) come out and dig a pit and help run it

I ran my M1028 in a Mud Bog competition in June.  I sank like a rock 3 times in a row.
This one had 2 classes.
Stock-Max tire size 34".
Modified-Tires 35" & over.
I might get some 34" Super Swampers (to stay in the stock class) and run it again when they have it in November.
I've spent over $100 at car washes since then, and it still has some mud left underneath.
Looks like you & your son had fun.

Man that looks like you guys really had a great time! Being a good redneck here in CA I would love to be at that event. Btw, I did spot your blue crew with the lift gate in pictures 3, 4 & 5 of your first post. Looks like the good trucks all made it out to play and watch the fun. Not a bad looking white D-Max duelly with the utility box either, is that one of your trucks too?

Post by: Irish_Alley on September 13, 2015, 12:26:54 pm
yeah i was going to tow my mud truck with my crew cab. but wasnt sure if they would let a truck in the pits that wasnt running in the pit or didnt have a trailer. so we hooked the trailer up to the duelly cause it was our tool truck. but its only a 8.1. he wants a cummins or a d-max in it so bad. he only gets 8 mpgs and is at the gvwr with the truck loaded with tools he went on the DOT scale and was a couple hundred over.

fitz that might have been our tire sizes also but im not sure. i thought about taking the new tires off my crew cab and running them so i could also be in the street A class.

in Maryland we have historic tags where all you have to do is take the title to dmv and give them an insurance number and they will just give you a tag. i told the guy who checked me in that it was kind of like cheating to do that and he kind of rolled his eyes and said yeah but we're here to have fun.

Oh yea those 8.1's really are a great power house gas engine but for your friends uses a D-Max would be a lot better.

I drove a medium duty 4500 Kodiak Solid axle 4wd at work once with an 8.1 and auto trans, not the fastest medium duty in the world. With a bucket lift on the back I think it may have been a bit over loaded.

I also drove another 4500 Kodiak 2wd with a 6 speed manual and D-Max, that thing was even slower! 1st barely got the thing to start rolling, 2nd got me to 15 mph or so, had to get going enough to get into 3rd to actually get the truck up and moving enough to not piss off all the traffic behind me.

Honestly I have driven alot of medium duty Kodiaks and top kicks, (from 1995 up to 2010 or maybe 11 or 12 when they stopped making them), 8.1s with mauals and autos, D-Maxs with manuals and autos, 4500-7500, and the bigger straight 6 diesels in the 65 and 7500s, (I think those are International engines). Box trucks, flat beds, giant utility boxes, cranes and bucket trucks for tree triming and utility pole work. Of all the different variants of the medium duties I've driven, I have found that the combo with the best get up and go no matter what the truck was setup to do, was a D-Max with the auto Allison trans. Loaded up or empty, those do the best at getting stuff moving. The I6's with the Allison are second best but the I6 is a bit slower than the Dmax. Even tho the I6 has more torque, the Dmax will spin faster so there's a bit more rpm range with each gear.

He should consider a 6.2, I love them. Plenty of power to tow the boat to the lake. You can pull the motor in the parking lot and use it as a anchor for the boat. At the end of the day, reinstall it in the truck & drive home.  Its a very practical motor.

Oh my gosh, even worse, they are solid too, but they don't belong in a 1 ton that has to haul around that much weight all the time.

Hey Tim the videos worked for me. What happened on the first run? Were you running in 4low and 2nd gear in the second video? It looked like you did not bog down any. What gears are you running also? It looked like a pretty good turn out too. The pics looked really good as well.
Title: Re: Mud bog

the first run i was in 4hi and 2nd gear (counting granny). the second run i was in 4lo and cant remember if i was in 1 (granny) or 2nd want to say 2nd again.
Title: Re: Mud bog
Post by: Don5 on September 17, 2015, 01:35:25 am
I thought you would be 2nd gear and running in 4 low. I have the same motor, transmission and transfer case that you are running. I think you are probably geared lower than me since you have a 3/4 ton. I think you are running 38's also right?
Title: Re: Mud bog
Post by: Irish_Alley on September 17, 2015, 01:49:42 am
4.10. those are 40s. this was my first real mud bog, so im still learning.
Title: Re: Mud bog
Post by: Irish_Alley on September 17, 2015, 02:02:58 am
so if i was in 4low and 2nd it would have a ratio of 7.01:1
in 4 hi and 2nd i have a ratio of 3.58:1
if i stayed in 4 hi and 1st i would have a ratio of 6.55:1
4low and 1st would be 12.83:1
next time i might try 1st gear its only a little difference than low and 2nd but im going to have to go out and play now
Title: Re: Mud bog
Post by: Don5 on September 17, 2015, 02:29:24 am
I know that a lot of guys that mud bog leave their transfer case in 4 low. I think it helps compensate for the stock gears like 3:08's that most guys have. I would love to have a set of 4:10's or 4:56's just to use for mud bogs. Especially those 4:56's. :)
Title: Re: Mud bog
Post by: Don5 on September 17, 2015, 02:31:49 am
You leave that transmission in 1st and boy is she going to whine and I mean loud. I'd say 2nd and 4 low is where you want to be. IMHO.

What do guys do to not over rev their trucks? I mean running 4 low in 1st or 2nd is going to send your rpms through the roof. Are you just watching the rpms?

lol i have no tach or temp gauges. i stripped the dash shortly after parking it. just guessing but i was prob around 5k. the motor hasnt been worked on and she wasnt breaking up. but i will definitely have a tach and temp gauge of some sort

yeah. it was kind of "oh crap" moment then time was running short and we had other things to work on. like changing the rag joint and changing the front gears to a non broken unit that had posi. then we also had to work on the blazer and the ford. i didnt have her floored i just hope i didnt cook anything. might need a new clutch but it still moving right now

it was different cause when we normally mud we have to worry about water more than mud. here there was some water but not much

I have a tach but you can tell by the sound when it starts getting tight.

When you mud bog you worry more about momentum and wheel speed. If I am throwing the mud in big chunks then my rpms are high enough. If I am turning a high rpm and not seeing a lot of mud being thrown then I ease up on the throttle to let the tires bite. If I ease up and the mud is still not flying then I am probably slowing down or at a stop. In which case I will give it the gas while turning the steering wheel left or right to get the truck to move. If the truck doesn't move then I am probably done.

It's all about momentum and wheel speed. It is not like you put your foot to the floor and hold it. I mean you can do that but if your wheels are spinning too fast to bite then you are going nowhere. I have seen too many people crank their truck up only to slow down and eventually stop because the rpm's are too high for the tires to get a bite.
Title: Re: Mud bog
Post by: Irish_Alley on September 18, 2015, 12:46:42 am
the first time as soon as i felt my engine slowing down i just quit. the second time i kept my wheels straight till i slowed down then i turned them and they bit and i was off again. never really thought about slowing the tires down and seeing if they would bite more. i was always told you need all the wheel speed and keep them spinning. makes sense to slow them down sometimes
