Hey, I have some small rust spots on the top of the cab. one looks like a scratch and another one is a round spot that has more rust in the center and almost no rust out on the edge. my question is. is that I want to stop or slow the rust down by sanding it and puting primer or paint on it. would it be ok to put just rattle can on it temperarly or should I put a primer on it and then rattle can. what type of paint should I use? need to hold up to the rain in the NW. rattle can is just fine for now till I get the truck painted. thanks for your help guys! Matt

I would sand off the rust and then primer it and hit it with some 500 degree engine paint and then a few coats of cheap clear paint.

I use a paint called "Rust Tough" that you can find at an O'Reilly's or Autozone. I think it is made by Duplicolor, so I'm sure other parts stores sell it too. If you don't have loose, flaking rust, just spray it on and it will instantly stop any rust. Loose rust has to be removed before spraying it. You can just spray the Rust Tough enamel right on without primer, but they do also make a Rust Tough primer if you want the paint to cover better. The primer isn't as resistant to sun and weather though, so if you don't plan to completely repaint the truck soon you will want to topcoat with the enamel.
