Hey guys, ok so every once in a while I get this wild hair up my butt and I decide that I need to change something on the truck. So this time it's my wheels, I like them, but I want to change the way they look somehow just to make it different and new, the current look is kinda boring now.
These are my current wheels and tires.
Now that part that I'm tired of is that stupid chrome soup can in the middle that they call a hub cover. It has no way of centering itself on the wheel, so everytime I put the wheels back on, I have to very carefully center them as best I can other wise it looks like I'm driving around with bent rims cuz those covers wobble in circles. Also, my lug nuts are "mag" type and that is a pain in the tailgate as it is, getting all of those things started is a freaking joke. Plus they are old, the chrome is beat up and they just look like doggy doo-doo.
So I know I do not want to change wheels entirely or paint them or just leave the covers off cuz that looks stupid too, other then that I'm not really sure what I want. I do want something with a bowtie on it tho, that I know I think I would like.
I've been thing about trying to put newer style center caps on just to change the look up, that requires lug nuts with external threads and for obvious reasons those type don't work on these wheels. So, any ideas or suggestions.
Can my wheels be drilled to except those types of lug nuts for center caps? Is there a special lug nut that is mag type with external threads to allow for this type of fit? Here are some of these center cap styles of been looking at. I like what the newer factory wheels came with.
Not sure where this wheel came from but it looks pretty good. Mainly looking at the center cap.

Ideas welcome, thanks folks!

Hey, I'll give you mine. I have three now. I couldn't figure out how to remove them, so I beat the first one apart to learn. LOL. I'll say that those plastic, fake lug nuts are surprisingly tough though!

Well that's really nice of you Dr_Snooz, which style do you have?
-
I figured out that the wheel I pictured first (the one on the red truck) is off an 8 lug Hummer H2, it has a Chevy center cap obviously. I figured it out today when I saw an H2 in the parking lot of work with those exact wheels and Hummer center caps.
See: with original H2 cap.

So I found these on Ebay, not looking to buy just yet. They look more late 80's early 90s style, so closer to the 73-87 time period but not so new like they are from 2008. Also what I found interesting is what looks like a metal ring on the under side. I think they snap onto the wheel instead of using those plastic twist on faux lug nuts. I think they snap onto the lug nuts them selves. Ide want to have one in my hand to experiment with just to see how they might fit on my wheels.

My girlfriend's dad has these original wheels off his 08 GMC 3500 D-Max. I know he talked about selling them but they are still sitting on the side of the garage. I could put chevy centers on them. I think they are 17s tho so that might be a deal breaker, I'm not getting new tires, mine are only 2 years old and over 80% thread left.

These are the wheels off of an '01 truck on my 78. Scroll down the page and you'll see em.

The wheels looked good and worked great. only problem for me was, when looking straight on at the front or rear of the truck, they were tucked in too far by 2.5 to 3" because of the newer trucks offset difference vs the old trucks.
Other than being tucked under the fender like a 50's car, they looked great. great from the side, but 50's car lookin from the front or back. but some wheel spacers would fix that up if that bugs ya.
If Ida had the wheels the OP posted at the bottom of the first post, I probably wouldnt have gotten my current wheels.
-
I've actually enjoyed following your truck at times. Yours is one of my personal favorites on this site. The wheels do look great on your truck but it's not what I want for mine. Those model of wheels come off the lower trim level and work truck models. I'm looking for something more like a top of the line trim level like LTZ, like my user name.
-
Well that's really nice of you Dr_Snooz, which style do you have?
You know, it's been awhile. I think they look like this, but not nearly as new and shiny:
They are buried somewhere in storage and it's entirely possible that I threw them out. I've been paring down a lot. I'll look for them the next time I'm there.
-
Cool thanks. No rush either, I may not do anything at all, I may snap and get new rims all together, I honestly don't know what I want. I'm not in a hurry to figure it out either.
-
My crew cab has the later style Hummer wheels on them for reference.
-
Yea see that's not horrible, tho I like the first style I showed a little better. I want something that compliments the truck being a 3/4 ton camper special. I don't want something that makes it look like a half ton or more like a muscle car. But I also want something that flows with the physical shapes and lines of truck.
-
i believe hummer wheels are all 17s also. so if your not wanting to buy new tires, hummers may not work for you
-

Well that could be an issue, I hadn't thought to check, thanks for pointing that out, that's probably a little important.
-
H3s are 16" the old military ones are 16.5. but the h2 were 17. but i thought there was something about the offset that made them not work with out trucks?
-

Interesting. The offset thing I have no idea.
-
I had a set on my 74. ran them until I got the steel wheels. never had much of a problem, actually looked pretty good. the only problem I had was I had to make sure the center hole had no dirt at all in it. actually had to run some sandpaper around it a little bit to get them to fit over the dana 44 front hubs.
-
you know it might just be the h1 that has the offset problems. or more like the military bead locks rims
-
I thought about trying to figure out a way to physically hold the inner soup can center in the whole so that the soup can and wheel can be put on as one unit that way it's always perfectly centered so there is no weebles wobble.
And then see of I can find a set of those plastic bowtie circles that are on the center caps of the rims on the red truck picture. If I can get those I can put them on the ends of my soup cans and that might make the little difference I'm looking for.
-
The caps that are held on with plastic nuts that thread on the lug nuts would be easiest and they tend to stay on better, as long as your current lug nuts are conical you can go to the parts store and get the externally threaded lug nuts for your truck and they will work just fine.

Thanks for the input, I knew all of that already. They won't fit on my current wheels because mine use a "mag" type lug nut. They look exactly like this.

I found out for sure that yes the Hummer H2 wheels are 17 inch wheels. So they are out.
-
Well I found these center cap emblems on flea-bay, they say aftermarket but they also say gm restoration so I bought a set of 4, with shipping it was under 20 bucks so if they don't work out not a big deal. I'm gonna put them on the center of the soup can just to see if they change the look just a little and maybe I will like that and that's all I'll need. They seem nice, cheap experiment, we'll see what happens.
-
Well these things arrived last Monday but I was on vacation so I didn't get them until today as I had them delivered to work and today was my first day back. They are very nice, seem to be of good quality, pretty sturdy, I didn't try and taco them but I did try to flex them just a tiny bit to see if they were flimsy and they didn't really wanna bend so I think they will be pretty durable to the outside elements.
If you look closely, the silver and gold areas actually look like brushed aluminum.
They are pretty thick and feel like they have decent weight to them.
Self adhesive backing, I hope it's a good quality glue. Don't want them to fall off on the road.
I tried to get an idea of how they look on a wheel but my finger ruins it and I'm trying to hold with one hand and take a pic with the other.
I think overall they will add the little touch I'm lookin for and I may order another set just for giggles.
-
In thinking about putting these emblems on, I had a thought. These soup cans in the middle have a dimple in the middle. Leaving a fairly large area of space unglued if I just stick them on as is. Won't this lack of full adhesion cause the glue to wear out sooner and fall off?
Is there a way I can fill in this area with something to make a full flat surface so the entire backing of the emblems can be used. I don't want to physically damage the soup cans in anyway like welding and grinding to fill in the space or something. Here's some pics compared to the size of a quarter for easy reference. Also the total depth is no more than the size of the outer ring of words on the back of the quarter, the part of the quarter that is visible touching the middle of the dimple.

I finally made it to storage the other day. I looked for my old hub covers and couldn't find them. I think I threw them out. I've been trying to reduce the clutter and those must have gone before the broom. Sorry.
-

It's all good! The offer was nice but I was not depending on it, so not a problem at all. Thanks again tho, I do appreciate it! I know I have some old parts that probably should have seen the circular file a long time ago.
-
Ok, I never did anything with my current wheels. I changed my mind today, I decided I'm ready for a total change. I want these now, they fit the image of the truck better.
-
Yes, i was going to recommend those very wheels----the later 3/4 ton aluminum. i was going to do them myself for my 1/2 ton, but after pricing out the adapters, wheels and new tires it ran about $400 per wheel. Not worth it in my opinion just have some bling. So, i'll be riding on stock rims for a while.
i think they are just bolt on for you though?
-
Yep and I don't need tires so just gotta find a set for the right price. I can do all the dismounting, mounting and balancing at work.
-
This isn't the truck that inspired me. There is a pic on, i think the 67-72 that looks very close to mine with those wheels but i don't have time to search for it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6mUgu7j9as
-
I've seen that video before. I didn't make me want them either. I want them because I think they fit well with my trucks appearance specifically.
-
If you want to keep your old rims and use the newer cap on them. I would use a mag style lug nut with an open end. So you can put the center cap on then use some stainless steel washers and bolts that thread into the lug nuts.
Here's a site that has some lugs that I'm talking about.
http://www.brandsport.com/nutslockssets4.html?appSession=214532950489258
-
Not sure I understand what you are trying to say. You can't thread a bolt into the lug nut because the lug nut is threaded on to the wheel studs. Plus the newer caps thread over the outside of the lugnuts. Either 1 of us is not on the same page as the other or I just don't understand what your saying.
-
I didn't think the stud would go all the way out to the edge of lug nut. I figured there would be enough threads left on the open side to use a bolt and a washer to hold on the newer style cap. Then you wouldn't be using the original plastic lug nut caps.
It was just an idea.
-
Oh ok. Yea I wasn't sure what you were getting at with washers and bolts for newer style caps. It's all good tho.
-
Guys, I did a terrible thing today.....
400 dollars and these belong to me now.
-
I love em, decent price for nice ones. I'd have to see the center caps on your truck but I approve 100%
-
They are like brand new. I took some quality metal polish to them when I got them home, I could see myself clearly in the reflection of both a rim and a center cap.
-
I gave $450 I think for the ones on my extended cab and they have corrosion. 2 tires were in great shape and the other 2 needed replaced but still legal.
-
i wouldnt mind a set for the crew but not sure about how the dana 60's hubs will fit even if i cut them
-
Zieg, I didn't even get tires, mine are still plenty good. No corrosion on these. Irish I think they should fit no problem.
-
my main concern is the hub caps, then on the same hand i love the classic dog bowls
-
Yea, I would have opted for stock steels with dog dish but I'm not going all original. These fit the look of the truck much better.
-
While not the rims and only similar center caps I found this image on FB Irish

That is someone who was thinking with their dipstick....Jimmy!
Yea I went there....lol
-
Oh by the way, I ordered the lug nuts from Summit Racing this morning. They arrive tomorrow or Wednesday and I might get these new wheels on the truck by friday.
-
Nice! They look great! Definitely post up some pics when you're done! Those wheels look great on a square! Too bad my truck is a 6 lug and the newer style factory wheels have a much smaller hub opening than what would fit on my truck.
-
Thanks. Don't worry, I will do some good before & after pics, I'm gonna clean the truck tomorrow anyway. Im pretty sure there is newer stock stuff out there that fits even with a six lug pattern.
-
Yeah the lug pattern is the same, but I thought the center hub hole got smaller when GM switched to IFS on 4x4's in 1988. I don't think the newer factory take offs will fit over my 4x4 hubs since they're larger in diameter?
-
Oh I'm not really sure. I know the hubs are still of decent size one trucks with IFS 4x4. Maybe be worth checking into tho.
-
Ok, as requested, here are the before pics, spend 4 hours today cleaning and making the truck pretty. These are with the current wheels, they were on the truck when I bought and until a few months ago, I liked them and had no reason to change, but I've changed my mind obviously. They won't be on the truck past this Friday tho.

I hit the post button and then realized I didn't attach the pics, but I just edited the post an added them.

Hey look! I can see that now! Ha ha! Truck looks good man! I can't wait to see it with its new wheels on it!

When are you going to post up some pics? Cuz you know that's what we're all dying to see! Lol!

If I could have bet on it, I would have put down a 100 dollars that you were going to be first to reply and that you would be exclaiming "PICTURES!".
I took one pic at work after they were mounted. I plan too take more on Sunday that will be the same stance and background as the before pics. If you really want to see them I can post a teaser or you guys can wait with deep anticipation like a bunch of school children waiting on the lunch bell. Hahaha.
How do you vote AZ87?
-
You're a funny guy! Lol! Nah, I can wait till you're ready. Don't rush on my account!
Oh, I vote on the right hand side of the spectrum! Was raised that way. Always have, always will!
-
Johnny come lately--
Hold it ltz, you forgot one last option for the new wheels... Lol

Thanks lol. I did mean do you vote to wait for pics or post the teaser. However I vote right also and I'm pretty sure that most of us on here do too. That's not really a topic we want to start here tho, that will open a giant can of worms.

Hahaha.....
NO!
-
Ahh! Gotcha! Nah, just like I said, I'm a patient guy and can wait till you're ready. The other voting is a separate topic, I agree there. Oh yeah, that yellow truck, although I'm sure is finished off nicely, it sure is ugly! What a waste of a perfectly good truck! Taste is each to his own, but I've never cared for the slammed ground scraping stance.
-
Agreed!!
-
Surprise! You can all stop holding your breaths now hahaha.
The wheels haven't been polished yet, but have been cleaned good. Plus the tires have a quality dressing that will keep them shining for weeks. Both of which you can see a clear reflection in. The reflection is of my hat.

I thought so too, thanks!
-
I love it! It turned out looking as great as I thought it would. Those wheels just go great with these trucks and it does appear all matching as if they had been there all along. Goes right along with your all original but high end trim theme.

On a side note, I had some free time so I threw 2 cans of engine enamel at my air filter housing. It was looking pretty bad with the old original paint.

I know it's not on topic but no reason to create a new post for just a small thing with a few pics.
-
That turned out looking great! What kind of paint did you use? I know you stated engine enamel, just curious what kind? I need to repaint my factory air cleaner assembly as well, especially since that's really the first thing you see when you open the hood. Something to put on the to-do list! Lol!
-
Duplicolor semi-gloss black engine enamel. Anything and everything under my hood that I want black I use this paint and this paint only. I used Chevrolet orange on my cylinder heads but everything else is black. It holds up excellent, the heat rating, ceramic properties and oil/grease resistance is very good. I love the stuff, use it alot. It's professional stuff.

Both are exactly the same and both are $6.99 at local O'Reilly's. Probably all new can design now tho.
-
Cool thanks! Luckily I have an O'Reilly's right up the street from me. It's usually where I go for my auto parts unless I can find it cheaper elsewhere. They should have that in stock.
-
Yea I have always had one close by. They should have at least 4 or 5 cans in stock lol. O'Reilly is the only place I go really. I have spent waaaayyyy too much money in those places.
-
Ha ha! Same here! :D
-
I should buy stock in the company lol.
-
Weird, we just got a brand new o'riellys up the road. Vile wanted to know if i wanted to paint the new engine gm blue. Maybe i will now.

I know, 77 was the blue engine era, right after the orange. But the crate is already gm factory black. Why strip off the black, prime and paint all over. More time and $$. Not a show truck.
Or else i would love to have it blue. What would it entail anyway?
-
No need strip brand new engine paint from the new engine, it's engine paint, leave it there. You could just make sure it's completely clean and then blast it with some engine primer and then GM blue. My short block didn't come with any paint at all and my heads were already orange, so I just swapped the heads to the short block, I didn't care how it looked, (I was on a bit of a time deadline tho during that time).

Ok, summit racing has the good dupont ceramic stuff, chevy blue. A couple cans should do it. Oil pan can stay black i guess.
-
The O'Reilly you said is near you should have it and if they don't they should be able to get it. You only get free shipping from Summit if you spend over $99. So 2 $7 dollar cans isn't really worth buying online. It would be faster and cheaper just to run to the store and pick them up the next time you need to go to O'Reilly.

My summit order will be near 2k, crate engine, remember? Plus lots of accessories.

As long as they don't consider that chemical related. You don't want to pay HAZ-MAT fees........Went thru that just trying to buy lapping compound.......couldn't believe that it had a mineral base they couldn't ship w/o charging the H-M fees......
-
Well your definitely covered on the shipping but yes there is the possibility of HAZ-MAT fee also.
-
Thanks, i'll check on that.

No problem, happy to help.

It's difficult to fight this fever----
Are there any 6 lug rotors that will adapt to a 1/2tons front spindles?
And did any 12 bolts come with 6 lug axles?
The practical side of me says no. But deep down inside i WANT those chrome 3/4 ton wheels.

They are actually polished aluminum with a clear coat finish. They are extremely light weight.

Stewart, something looks odd about that orange amd white truck.

1/2 ton 4x4's came with 6 lug 12 bolts up int the early 80's, then 10 bolts.
Front 2wd spindles 6 lug don't know bout that.
3/4 ton wheels are 8 lugs to my knowledge.
