well guys... new to the forum...
had a 2007 yukon, put 250k on it... got a 2011 suburban traded it @ 150k finally for a car (wife wanted it)
realized quick i like to pickup random shoot (pallets, furniture, whatever) and a car wasnt going to cut it
saw what i believe to be a deal on this truck... with a plow... loved the flat bed on it... wife's father in law
is very mechanically inclined. they poured gas on the carb, charged battery, it turned on and he said it sounded
good (oldest vehicle ive ever owned is a 1995... so to me, it just sounded like every older car/truck)
brakes were locked on it, its a dually but was missing a dually tired, two fronts were flat.
bought it for $950 with plow. towed it to his place for $30. i know 0 about working on cars.....
took it to his place, took the dually side off, threw it up front because one of the tires was bad. put in air,
he did whatever he had to do (i dont actually know?) to unlock the breaks... and she runs fine! sounds loud
as heck. today i popped in a front headlight and we cleaned off the rear lights(they had over spray of black)
and he grounded them (marker lights were working)
im the kind of person who doesnt like to buy stuff without reviews, he said i did good. fun little truck i think!
going to hunt down some led clearance/marker lights this week. he said for me to call the junk yard for a set
of rims for the dually... and so, the ideas begin!

Welcome from Northeast AZ!

Welcome from central California.
-
Welcome from southern PA!
i love the truck dude nice flatbed too
-
thanks all :D
wife named it "rusty" ::)
-
was told by seller it was a 1971, someone else told me a 75, manual is a 78, title is a 77... so now im not sure what to believe but i guess going with the title makes the most sense. father in law said its a k30 though.. thats all i know so far.

Welcome from Maryland. Can't tell from the pictures but there's a cab and chassis rear and it typically came without a bed and people/dealers would put flat beds or utility beds on them. They appear to be the width of a regular axles with bud wheels.
I got my led lights for my clearance lights off eBay. Paid $8 for 10 so I was able to put them in the other sockets that have 194 bulbs.
Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav=item.view&id=201378192648&alt=web
But I got white LEDs thinking they would brighter and they are but they change the color of the clearance lights to a yellow/greenish color.
Also with LEDs if you don't know they only work one way so I put mine in with The lights on but I'm going to be swapping them with yellow ones soon as that's what's the people who sell the clearance lights sell with them
-
i bookmarked the link! thanks! i was looking at these marker lights from china though her uncle said i need new connectors and grommets... he said might as well wire it up right and ill never have to do it again....
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2pcs-LED-Round-Reflector-Tail-Brake-Stop-Marker-Light-Indicator-Truck-Trailer-Car-New/2046764089.html
i need:
2x red 4in marker lights
2x white 4in marker lights
5x red 2in marker lights
2x yellow marker lights
theres some loose wires and lights there now are bad... rubbers rotten (when we removed to clean, its all dried out)

might be a dumb question but i called my local junk yard for rims... i need two more, they said $60/ea? i understand tires arent interchangeable but dont they make a plate of somekind to make it more.... versatile? rims+tires = 1/4 cost of truck = silly
-
Those rims should be pretty cheap never got some from the junk yard but someone should have some for cheap. You can pretty much use rims off anything if it has the 8 x 6.5 pattern, Ford changed up first in 98 (99 style) chevy was in 2011 and not sure if dodge ever did
-
Welcome from Maine and soon to be Ga... look learn and share. I would have paid $950 for that too
-

got the plow on :)

the hunt has begun on Craigslist... I guess the father in law said the tires I have aren't meant to be on there... he says if I find a decent set of rims and get some new front tires (put what is on the front to the back) it will drive a world different
Sent from my SCH-R950 using Tapatalk

those are the correct style. dually wheels or bud wheels, judging by the picture that rear axles looks like its a cab and chassis if you put a reg wheel on it the tire will be sitting too far in
-
still looking for decent tires and rims... got a few messages out on ebay about better deals on market lights!
thinking about snagging this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/331353922608
truck doesnt have a rearview but sensors would be really nice! and that dont seem to shabby for the price
-
http://www.ebay.com/itm/400964838942
saw this button start too, thatd be the nuts since the truck has two keys (door+car... first time ive ever dealt with that?) but im sure
once i tell the father in law he will say "you are getting too wild" lol
-
one thing i was looking at was a rear view camera. and they have rear view mirrors that have displays in them to let you see the camera.
something like this

like this

I will say this just as a teaser for you Irish and others who may be reading. I'm working on an OEM type rear view camera project for the truck, I've sourced out a mirror to use, just have to find one for the right price and I've already aquired a rear camera. Then I will do a full project post. Until then, that's all I'm saying for now. When it's done it should look like the truck came brand new, factory installed with the system.
-
that was my hold up. i dont want something that doesnt look like it belongs. as to why i dont have a tach setup, im even partial to replacing the radio. i dont even have any bumper stickers on any of my vehicles except the 94 which says "honk if you honky tonk" and thats cause its the wifes truck and shes in love with george

I look at stickers on cars like I look at tattoos on people. Am I really gonna be happy with this in a year.

check out a Dakota digital dash for 1977 I was like this is awesome... father in law called it happy horse shoot I don't need lol

There are many members here who have used dakota digital clusters. I plan to get one also some day.
-
I had the Dakota in my 79 also I didn't mind it cause I knew my speedo was right. And this is a far from stock looking truck with a lift kit and 38s. I got a GM tach to replace the fuel gauge in my truck but the print on the gauge didn't match my other gauges. And I couldn't swap clusters cause the oil gauge was still manual and the speedo was also manual compared to my 91 which was all electronic. The ideal of putting the Dakota in my 91 has ran across my mind but I'm not set on doing that right yet and I would have to figure out the speedo then I would have to figure out the speed sensor for the tcu
-
pretty excited.. seems like people have a lot of parts for this truck just sitting around and just want to get rid of them!!! got two brand new tires with tags still on them for my truck yesterday for $10/ea (farm n fleet was $169/ea)... today I am going to see a guy who has 6 dually rims he wants $10/rim for them... mine are rusty and his I guess have no rust and still have paint.. not sure what to do with old rims.. recycle? keep as backup? I dunno

got the rims... they look pretty clean... got a list of parts I need to hunt and Jew down... one of them being fuel tank straps seems the prices are all the same online and local anyone found a certain site that blows the rest away in price?

well.. the truck stops.. lol.. I'm not the best judge because our other car is a 2015 and he says these older trucks don't stop on a dime like that.. I guess the guy we got the truck from said it was a winter used only plow truck so rick just mentioned this is everything I should mess with and be ready to go... this weekend we are going to take apart the fuel tanks because my left tank shows past the full line and doesn't read... when I use the switch to the right, it shows empty however the guy we got it from said they never used the right side and thought it didn't work. rick was thinking since grounding the tank did not work.. take the sensor out of right, put into left, see if that gets it going

flat blacked the rims.. I think we're going to flat black the whole thing

While these are old trucks there is no reason these old trucks can't stop on a dime. You just have to make sure your entire brake system is all up to par and there isn't any old parts in it.
For example the two wheel cylinders I had on my truck were different brands as one brake bleed screw was 10mm and the other was 8mm.
-
well we dropped the fuel tanks.. one of them is rusted up bad and junk Rick says... other one wouldn't last long so he said hunt one for now and I'll be alright. 20g is what it is. cheapest I can find online is $68+20shipping for a 16g not a 20g... :( any help?

I read over the link.. so to clarify a 16g will work on a 20g but a 20g to 16g takes some modifying?
Sent from my SCH-R950 using Tapatalk
-
well you run into the spring hanger which i dont think can be really modified. so if you have a short bed youre stuck with the 16 gal unless you go to the blazer/burb tank which mounts where the spare tire would be at in between the frame rails
-
I know there isn't a spare there now... I'm assuming you meant stuck with the 20g not 16g correct? it does have two 20g.. one is rotten real bad and hasn't been used in a while. I just know it says custom deluxe on the side? not quite sure the price difference from 16g to 20g is worth the extra 8g@$100 difference?
Sent from my SCH-R950 using Tapatalk
-
a short bed is stuck with the 16 gal. was thinking thats what you had
-
nope, Rick measured them they are 50" inch they are 20g he says
Sent from my SCH-R950 using Tapatalk
-
M815 where are you? The reason I ask is that if you go with the 16 gallons you will need the hard lines and retaining brackett for the fill andmvemt line. I just so happen to retain things because the " you never know" factor. If I can drop them off on my back to the good ole south (God's Country) then they are all yours... No charge what so ever

so we got the gas tank back together, primed it, painted it, fixed the feeding tubes for it(i forgot what he called them). we had our first good snow fall for the season, 8 inches [which has melted off now] and we put her to the test! it did good, took it to a few cousins houses to plow the driveways there. hah, no one is laughing at old rusty now!! but i have also been trying to compare this truck to another and really do not know much about plow trucks. if i wanted to use this truck as a stepping stool, what would be a model to look for? i found a ford f600 but rick said that isnt the same kind of truck as this... the f600 can haul a lot but wouldnt be a good plow truck.

Sore looksmlike this could move some snow!!! F600
-
my thoughts exactly!! but he said i was more likely to get stuck in that then rusty... he's a ford guy but i think he loves rusty and doesnt want to see it go lol
-
Having plowed in an f150, f350, f600, as well as a k20, Silverado 2500 4x4, and a c3500HD, stick with the k30...It will serve you well as a plow truck. Medium duty trucks tend to be 2wd, and do an alright job pushing snow in a straight line for a few miles at a time. Bad for driveways, bad for parking lots, okay for city streets, county roads, and to some extent, highways.
-
most our state plow trucks are 2wd
-
And for the purpose of pushing snow on state roads/highways, they work fine..course, most of them also roll with 2 tons worth of salt/salting equipment in the bed. For driveways, parking lots, etc, there is a reason commercial plow companies don't use 2wd medium duty trucks. They are inefficient at moving and stacking. Much like trying to plow commercial lots with a rear blade tractor...it works, but not well.
-
we also see a lot of them stuck lol
-
so ive been driving the truck around at night more recently.
my guages are very dim even though i have the dimmer turned to its highest.
i suspect that the bulbs are blown or just real junky....
was thinking about taking the guage out and putting these bulbs in to see better
did i choose the right bulb? i did a forum search but the results were dead links
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261635681548
cheers
mike
-
i know when i replaced my bulbs in my 91, the 194 bulbs wont just pop in. you have to buy an adapter that can be found in the parts store or ebay. someone will post more info on it
-
you can see them here
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-Blue-For-Chevy-PC194-Instrument-Panel-Cluster-Led-Light-Bulb-Dashboard-/261266573375?hash=item3cd4b3883f:g:K0cAAOSwT6pVzgBF&vxp=mtr

-
so to be sure whatcha saying is then... i need the adapter as well as the led [though i think ill go bright white, not the blue!] correct?
-
if you have the seperate bulb, you need the 194 bulb/led and the second link. you can buy the 194 bulb/led and adapter sets like the 1st picture (color is your choice) as another option. but either will work, if the led wont work then turn it 180°.
-
curious if youve done this/did you notice a big difference from stock?
-
not with leds but with regular bulbs. i know some have done it on here for the dash. if i was to do it i would make sure you can dim them (know at one point you couldn't but i think now they all dim) for me i dont like a bright dash or anything in my eyes i will normally dim the dash right before it goes out
-
hah then you would love my dash i can just barely see the speedometer everything else is black lol
-
If you really want to help the coloring of the gauges and bulbs then get some flat white spray paint and paint the inside of the plastic. The dark dingy blue color really doesn't help and by painting it white things get a lot brighter.

Same thing happens if you use a bright silver or chrome spray can paint. I used the spray chrome, I was impressed how well it boosted the visibility.

Yup! I've always done white as its the one that I used at the time.
-
Long as it's not "new born baby boy" blue.
-
I've done this recemtly/. I thought I posted it but I !may have just taken pics and forgot to post. I used the 194 equivalent LED bulbs from Auto zone. They work great and are dimable. Mine has a faint blue Hugh to them because the back of the shroud has a light blue slightly reflective paint or coating on it. If I find the pics I will post it. There is a Hugh difference in illumination and the LED's won't melt the gage cluster housing
-
I can't find the pics I took but I will try to take a video when it gets dark and I will post it up. Idk what bulbs were in the 1975 clusters but if the are the all glass and socket type then you shouldn't need an adapter.

I'm trying to justify buying these, putting them in the entire dash and then turning right around and buying the dakota digital system. I want DD like really bad so it seems silly to put these in. I guess we'll see how much money I have left from my tax returns after I rebuild the suspension, that will tell me if I'm getting DD or not.

jesus christ $12.99/ea! go on ebay, snag 20x for $10 is what im seeing
then you can have the lights now and the dash later guilt free

ordering the bulbs tomorrow as a late christmas gift to myself
old rusty is sure to make you laugh. i got the alignment done and now since, every once in a while
the car will shake violently. father in law said to bring it over, he believes its a front steering shock
i believe he called it. as i was parking the truck yesterday, my park would not work. it seems park
is reverse, reverse is neutral, and so forth. this of course made amy laugh as i parked the truck
sideways so it doesnt roll down the slope and chalked the tires. still happy with the truck, so someone
was knocking down a house in town and i salvaged 15ft floor joists from an 1880s building and a
giant old beam.. i thought to myself, this is exactly what i needed in my life!
-
the gears being the wrong spot is usually due to the rubber on the gear shiftier.
http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=31459.0
-
Or something in the shift linkage broke or slipped. Or the linkage wasn't installed installed with the shift shaft fully in the proper gear, so now it has slipped into the wrong gear.
-
Hmm.. I'm not sure how he fixed it but he took a rod out from under and realigned? We fixed the front steering shock which wasn't too bad to fix and it seems to have handled the shaking violently situation. He pointed and instructed me how to change every spark plug and wire today as well. Never done that before, looks easier not being under the hood lol. Next I need cap, rotor, brakes he says
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
If you have ANY front end shaking you have worn components that need to be looked at ASAP. The steering shock will hide this shaking but does not fix it.
-
I know it isn't doing this anymore. The truck is very worn, you can see through the floor and the door bottoms are rusted up. He says if I am going to keep it, I need to find a donor truck for a new can and various parts. The truck was only used as a plow truck... Hence the name rusty. Everything, entirely rusty lol. For what little driving I do with it and wood fetching, I can baby it... But I don't think it's a restoration project that's for sure

-
Took rusty out for a drive today about 40mi out of the area... What a difference! When I was taking out the spark plugs he said two were shot and probably not firing right... And when I disconnected these other two they ripped in half... Anyhow, it's running way better! New front brakes on the way this week and led lights for the dash. I need a new ram soon he says, tomorrow we are getting dumped on with snow! It's about time, only I would get a plow truck and we get a light winter
