Title: Grinding sound mystery
Post by: deno86 on October 13, 2015, 10:02:00 pm
Ok so I have an 81 k10. The issue is when my hubs are free everything is good. When I lock the hubs theres a grinding rubbing noise coming from somewhere from the front drivers side wheel. So I replaced the u joints, repacked the wheel bearings and replaced the hubs one at a time to see if that'd fix and and after all has been replaced its still making that noise no different than before. The noise isn't constant its just when the breaks are applied or you hit a bump. It does it at all speeds and in 2 wheel with bubs locked, 4h and 4l. the only time it doenst do it is in 2 wheel with bubs free. This has become the bane of my existence. Any ideas?

Try putting the front axle up on stands. Lock one hube at a time and give it a spin to try and locate the noise. You said you replaced the hubs.. Did you mean the locks or the whole hub?

You may be experiencing a chain rub inside the transfer case and the noise is fooling you by echoing down the front drive shaft. X2 on putting the truck on jack stands and listening.

I replaced both hubs entirely. I'll try that as soon as I can and post back. It's just weird that it only happens when you hit the breaks and or hit a bump. I'm not very well versed in transfer cases but there's a chain in there? Sorry if that's a dumb question

can you still hear it with just one or the other hub locked?

I get this noise from my transfer case which i believe is chain slop. Do you have a np205 (steel) or np208(aluminum) .
Im not sure about this butt could be something in the diff as well

It's a steel transfer case. I haven't tried one at a time yet tho. I can lock one at a time a drive it without screwing something up? The trans and diff were rebuilt like 7k miles ago but probably the best trans guy in town not sure about the transfer case tho. The old motor went out so it sat for 4 years before I got around to replacing the motor so I'm sure there wear on some of that stuff tho.

Won't hurt a thing one hub. Should have a 208 TC

Ok so it still makes that noise with just one hub locked in on either side but its not nearly as bad or loud

On the front axle their are visible u joints. A replaced ball joint should have a grease fitting. Check to see if the axle u joints hit a grease fitting or anything

I would say if it isn't hitting anything(the wheel joints) then you have an issue in the axle. I believe you can drop the front driveshaft on the steel transfer cases to completely rule out drive shaft or transfer

before you do that did you try and lock just one or did you lock on and then unlock it then lock the other side?
x2 about the driveshaft. that would be my next move if you tried to lock both hubs at different times
then lock one hub at a time again

Yep I locked one at a time and still did it. And no I looked for clearance issues already til my neck was sore and didn't see any. After locking one hub at a time the sounds is still in the same place. Passengers side axle. So I think that may be the culprit. I won't have a chance to work on it til Sunday or Monday unfortunately

Had the noise before you did all the work?

I got the same issue but my 87 chevy dose it only on 2 wheel drive. On the front driver side. On 4x4 it drives good with no noise.

Check the rear of the front springs at the shackle, worn bushings can cause the spring to rub the frame just to rule that out. It makes a funky sound that can be misinterpreted.

Drop the driveshaft and try it

Sounds like a brake caliper moving around or maybe some axles had a shield on the axle shaft that supposed to keep dirt out of the tube  and they sometimes scrape against the tube
