I use a 90 degree pick like this to pull the clip off

you can try pulling hard on the handle, it'll sometimes bend the clip out of the way, but if the plastic is brittle it could break

I use a microfiber clothes.....works better then anything I have tried. Basically find where the ends of the horseshoe clip is and take a microfiber cloth and put it behind the crank and pull it back and forth until the ends catch on the cloth and pop right off.

this is what i do also. the way i do it is find which way its pointing put the rag over the points and pull one end of the rag. the rag will catch the clip end so it wont go flying off and you have to find it

I will definitly try the rag method first.  Friday i have tons of new parts to install.  New dash pad came in today.  Very exiting, other than the nervous sick feeling in my stomach for dropping $1200 in parts. But this completes the truck.  Amen!

I've always used a slotted screwdriver. I put the screwdriver up against one end of the clip, give it a smack and push the clip off the spindle. Don't gouge up the door panel though.
