Okay, so when I put my 1986 GMC K1500 pickup (4x4) in drive, and put my foot on the ga's pedal, the engine has to Rev up to...I guess around 2500 rpm or more, (I don't have a rpm gauge) before the truck starts to move at all. The second I take my foot off the gas, the wheels stop turning and the truck skids to a stop. The truck drives fine in reverse, which makes me think it may be first gear has blown.
I also took off the transmission pan and drained the fluid, to see if there were any shards of metal in the pan, but there weren't any.
How do I determine if first gear is gone, or if it is the torque converter or clutch plates before I replace the entire transmission?
It was fine when I put it up on jackstands, but I was lazy, so I untorqued the lug nuts without setting the parking brake or lowering the truck. The wheels would turn one direction, causing the other to turn opposite, but they would not spin the other way for some reason, I don't know if that is normal. After taking the wheels off then putting them back on, I found the wheels wouldn't spin at all in park or neutral, off the ground. I lowered the vehicle and it would roll again in neutral, but the problem I stated now happens

700R4? What happens when you put it in 1st gear? Any different than when you are in OD?

sounds like ebrake is jammed on. the reason its taking so many rpms is cause you have to reach the torque converter stall speed then it will try to move. if you put in in reverse the e brake isnt as effective, how does this theory sound vile?
