anybody know what size socket I need to get for the rear end nut on my 1979 3/4 ton ? I need to pull it apart so I can get to my wheel cylinders .
-
You need one of the 6 stud type sockets. Most parts stores have them in their rental/loaner program.
-
thanks , is that all I need to ask them for is a 6 stud socket for my gm truck ?
-
Or you can just use a hammer and punch.

Which axle nut are you referring to. The axle nut for the wheel bearings, or the pinion yoke.
-
Assuming wheel bearings since he's trying to get to his wheel cylinders.
-
wheel bearing , sorry my fault . my son picked a socket up it only has 4 prongs so hope it works its what the parts store told him so will see . was hoping to get a loner but they didn't have one which I guess in a way was ok since we had crappy weather up here last weekend going to try for this weekend need to get it done its my plow truck !

4 pins are for hub nuts on front axles.
6 pins are for the 14 bolt hub nuts.
They aren't interchangeable.
You can get them off with a pin punch. Setting the proper bearing preload and not boogering up the slots without the right tool is really kind of difficult.

Sorry, that was my ignorance, I didn't read your post properly. Yes, you need a Chevy 4WD 6 stud socket
