This will certainly show your age, but can anyone on this site actually remember the "new car smell" from a square body? I actually do, it was 1986 and I worked for a golf course and they had just got a brand new 1986 c-10 fleeetside, it was brown with tan interior. The truck was totally stripped, no features at all, I believe it was a four speed on the floor. Sadly, we used to beat it a little, fry the clutch, powerbrake, jump stuff and (if you have a weak stomach, don't read this) we used to hold the lighter in until it was glowing red and sink it into the dash pad! Ouch!! I know, I know...I was a punk kid.

Wow, am i the ony one over 40. No one can recall being in a brand new 73-87?

I performed many a dealer prep (PDI) before new vehicle delivery, and repairs before and after-the-fact. From Caballeros and 1500s all the way up through Brigadiers, Astros and Generals. Got to drive 'em with fewer than 3 miles on the odometers. Weren't even dusty yet. The fragrance of fresh carpet and body sealer. Even the engines and drivetrain smelled new! No fluid leaks. Gear oil, clean as a whistle! Not even surface rust on the drive axles. You know a vehicle is new when all the iron is fresh cast, none of the fasteners are marred and all the labels are present and accounted. lol
-
Wow! That IS new! Now thats what im talkin bout!! Not even surface rust on the axles.

My 2002 SilveradoHD will soon be 15 years old. To this day it still has the new truck smell. I should add that I ordered the truck, took delivery of it the day after it arrived at the dealership, and it has set in my garage everyday of its life since I purchased it. Truck still doesn't have 10,000mi on the odometer. It still has the paper assembly line decals on the frame and shock absorbers. Never been on a dirt road. Got caught out in the rain twice but the roads dried up both times before I drove home.
My dad's 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 convertible is the exact same way. Still smells new inside. It has a little over 60,000 original miles on it. No rust. Engine still looks brand new.
But yes, I do remember new 1986, and 1987 square body trucks. Went and looked at a brand new 1986 K20. Couldn't afford it.....stickered for $8,600.00 IIRC. A lady in town bought it. I remember seeing it around town for many moons.....watching it dissolve away as the new truck slowly transformed into rust and deterioration.

No, but i remember 80's B and C body smells as my parents were shopping for one---i went with them and they eventually got a Bonneville.
Smell was so strong i nearly got sick occasionally. Not that i'm complaining as it was not a bad smell, just very strong. i think this lasted about a year and a half.
Their 2001 cadillac deville smell lasted about 4 years and didn't smell as good as the older b and c cars.
As i side note i have to say that the Bonneville was the smoothest, quietest, most luxurious car we ever had----even more so that the newer cadillacs that my parents eventually bought.
They really just don't make them like they use to..............
-
Excuse me, but i just have to say one more thing that's not really related to the topic but i can't take it anymore.
One thing that's really missing from the car world is there is no more Olds 88/98, buick lesabre/electra/ Bonneville, Caprice etc.
These were really good, wonderful cars and i think there is definitely still a market for them.
True, the SUV has kinda taken over that role of the big car, but it isn't the same.
-
Yeah very sad, every single car on the road looks like this, no matter the make or model.

.....and the days of this car (my favorite) have gone into history and are now an American heritage. An older man in my church used to work at a chevy dlr as a mechanic and remembers the new smell of 64 impala ss. Imagine that.

I went with my sister, & brother in law in 1978 when they went to pick up there brand new C 10. I can still remember the smell, the ride home, every little squeak it made. I have always loved the sound the doors on these truck made when they were new.
-
Brand new smell of a c-10 from the 70's, now thats something.
You can still buy that smell today, but it'll cost ya! Sickning!!
Something is wrong for a new truck to cost that much. Should be about $20-25 tops.

Stewart G, currently you can still buy a brand new Buick Lasabre, they are actually very nice cars and you can also still buy a brand new Caprice, the only catch to that is that you have to be a law enforcement agency, the Caprice is strictly a police vehicle now. Btw, they are ALOT of fun to drive, speaking from experience.
Philobeddoe, you think that add you posted is expensive? Go on Chevrolet ' s website and build a 3500 HD crew cab long bed, single rear wheel, 4x4, Duramax/Allison, High Country Silverado LTZ. If I remember correctly, those pass 70,000. That's the truck I'de buy if I could. One day I will be able to aford it and I will buy one.
-
I will go to the site and build it, get ready for an angry response...
-
My boss owns a black 2015 Chevy 3500HD High Country single rear wheel 4x4. I believe it cost him $82,000 CAD. Is a nice looking truck but $82,000 is a little ridiculous.
The smell wasn't even that nice lol.

Yea I built one time on chevy ' s website, with all the options I wanted, it was somewhere around there, I know it was over 80. I love everything about them tho, even the smell lol. Heck, last night built a brand new truck to like mine as if it was my truck only brand new, same color, 2wd, interior colors, it was like 50 grand.
-
I can recall the new car smell from my parents '86 GMC 1500 Suburban and an '87 GMC R-1500...
The Suburban was always garaged and kept the new smell for a long time and was in pristine condition. That's possibly why it was stolen out of a parking lot around 2001 with around 80K on the odometer.
-
Stolen, that stinks.

The funny thing is, sales of the smaller front-drive big cars are up. So i guess people don't like them real big?
i have seen a few Caprice police cars around here. i think the only reason GM won't allow chevy to sell it is because Cadillac does not have a large RWD sedan at the moment.
-
GM doesn't let Chevy sell them because they are a law enforcement agency only vehicle. That is GM's intended market. Also. Cadillac has the CTS-V, 6.2L, supercharged (older models weren't supercharged but I'm pretty sure the newest model is), 6 speed, rwd. It's a pretty good sized car.
-
No I cant - I was 13 when my Dad bought this Truck :)
-
I do remember that smell, my Step Dad through the 70s and 80s got new work trucks every two years, so often he would have a new box Chevy brand new. Most of the time, that smell left quickly as he did not know how to take care of a car. They were work trucks though.
Chevy trucks did/do indeed have a unique new car smell compared to others.

Bought a bran spankin new 74 Chevy C-10 LB with 350 and 3 on the tree..........$3400.00
edit.....unfortunately at about 400 miles it developed a severe knock. Took it back to the dealer and a couple days later the service guy said "congratulations you got a brand new short block courtesy of GM. The 2nd and 4th main bearings were non existent, as in never put in, when they tore it apart Surprised it made it 400. He was too.

Dang it :'(
