Title: GMC emblems-only for the richer half?
Post by: 1967KaiserM715 on December 06, 2015, 09:21:34 pm
Hi all, been kind of casually searching for stuff I don't need for my truck(yet ;)), and realized that the emblems-specifically the fender emblems for GMC trucks are like $100 bucks a side! are they really that hard to find? I mean I definitely don't see any aftermarket support for the emblems, I wouldn't mind getting a set of the High Sierra fender emblems at some point, but definitely not at the asking prices I have seen on stealbay. occasionally I will see the dash emblems for about 25-30, but that is it(or a really faded, beat up one) my parts truck has half of one emblem on the drivers side, and that is it- the dash emblem is still nice, so I will steal that for my truck, but I am surprised there aren't more sources for the GMC emblems.

That's all part of the prestige that comes with a GMC, it's an exclusive club...  :)

Back on point, depending upon the year model, items like tailgates and grills can also be very elusive. On some parts, you might start at the GMC parts department and see if its still in the system.  If not, get the GM part number and do internet searches for new old stock using the part number.

NOS prices can vary widely depending upon the seller.  If its a GM dealer that has had the part laying on the shelf for 30 years, they may sell it cheap to clear shelf space; versus a NOS only dealer that may try to get the absolute maximum price for an item.

Plus keep an active eye open when on ebay, swap meets or at the salvage yard.  Many years ago, I went to a salvage yard with a friend to get a 383 for his Dodge and just checked the GM side of the yard and found a very clean and straight '73 GMC with the original tailgate with the chrome letters-  I wasn't looking for one at the time, but got it for next to nothing.

Yeah found a rust free, but not perfect GMC  tailgate for 50 bucks right after getting my truck. I am still undecided on the grille. I am not sure I will like the stock GMC grille that came on the' 85 with my planned color scheme, I am almost thinking a gloss black billet chrome one with a GMC emblem attached somehow

The GMC grilles look the best, don't ditch any of your original stuff even if you do opt to get a different one. What year emblems? 3D printing is another option instead of paying ridiculous prices on some hard to find non reproduced parts.

GMC emblems and trim are indeed an outrageous price if you can find them. It all depends on the condition of the part as well. I myself have fallen victim to the inflated GMC prices but I'm a pretty good Haggler. Sometimes you find a part for cheap and sometimes you pay through the nose.
