Title: pro touring/ LS questions
Post by: Zwarge on December 24, 2015, 08:38:56 am
hey guys I have few of questions on a build I'm putting together very slowly. the few will spawn from the others. so ill explain it first. I'm looking to go a pro touring underneath but mild stock outside. my truck is a 85 custom deluxe trim c10 I've got  4/6 static drop with a 454 40 over and a built 700r4 in it atm. I plan of the build going completely different then the way now cause what I got now is just to get it driving on the road. what I'm looking to do is buying a full glass nose but not a one piece so individual fenders a hood roll pan the front but keep the steel inner fenders due to rocks from the road and crap. I'm looking into porterbuilt coilover x member and 4 link with a watts link in the rear relocate the gas tank in the rear 14 in 6 piston calipers front and rear and 17s with like a 255 front ( due to tire clearances. don't want custom rolled wheel wells.$$$$) and 275-325 rear ( coil overs mounted out side for better handling ( from what I've red). drive train wise I'm looking into the l33 5.3 aluminum block balanced with stronger internals and possibly patriot heads and a mid cam for goals of about 500 hp. t56 for the trans. now for the questions. has anyone ran the glass front end on their truck with a LS what are the front/rear weights? motor wise am I getting over zealous with my hp goal on that aluminum block? I'm not going iron for the weight ik the iron capabilities for hp but the weight is a big thing for what I want to do. I'm shooting for a 50/50 front vs rear weight as much as possible and the extra 88lbs a aluminum block will help. even a little. completely side note anyone with the 5.3 and around that hp what are the mpgs ur looking at. I plan driving it a bit aside from the track stuff so I'm curious... also any opinions or concerns will help. I've been planning this just life is just now aligning so I can start on this project and id like to try to get it right as much as possible the first time.. thanks for everyone's help. if anyone has questions for me or need me to go more in-depth on the build I can.

fiberglass clip, vs stock how much weight are you really going to save? The front clips two people can lift easily.  I would look into a rear mount fuel tank and ditch the saddle tanks. I just picked up a 5.3 that I am going to twin turbo. the 5.3's with the right heads, cam, exhaust, and intake they put out mid to high 400 horse power numbers. a supercharger is an easy 500 hp. I would save the money on the front end cosmetics and put it into the brakes putting disc rear conversion and a posi traction diff.

If you are getting a fiberglass hood and fender it won't save you much weight.
My truck in the link below has a USBody Source tilt on it.  With the LS in it and the clip on, it is way higher than it was with the 454 and metal front.  I can pick the tilt up over my head...

I think you might find yourself limited to about 13" rotor with 17" rims, but maybe you could squeeze 14s in.  You'll just have to be very careful on the combination selection.

Will you be able to get much of a gas tank behind the rear axle with the added depth of the Watts-link?
