Hello fellas my name is Pete, I'm out Texas and a proud owner of a 1974 GMC that had a big block pontiac 455 in it which sounded awesome before I had strip the truck, a lil sick but still awesomely loud! ;D So anyways I had originally started a thread in the welcome section cause I didn't know anything about this one. So I'll be posting lots of pics but without captions just till all of yall r up to speed with my build. I've been told that this is where I need to be for help and for those who need help. So if anyone has any questions don't b scared to ask I'll answer them to the best of my ability.

Born and raised here in good Ole lil abilene texas for 34 years now. I'm guessing ur from New Mexico then? That's cool tho, maybe after I get the pickup done u should come thru and check it out. I got a couple other projects going also. A 1982 elco and a 1964 4 door hardtop no post impala. Three pumps 10 switchs, u know just for fun lol.

K fellas that kinda brings everyone up to speed on my build. There r still a few things that I've already done but just haven't captioned any of it. Plus there's a few things I have questions on and hopefully some of yall professionals out there can help me out. But for the moment here's a few before and after pics side by side just to give an idea of how much hard work I've put into just the front end suspension. Once I'm completely thru I'll start on the engine and transmission work with new gaskets paint job and maybe a comp cam and some other goodies. I'll post the progress on that as well.

K guys so I'm needing some advice on the fuel lines I've already bolted to the frame. I had ask about a third line coming out of my fuel sending unit before I had taken everything apart and found out it was for a charcoal canister to help with the smell of gas. The fella told me that I really didn't need to put it back being that it was cap off with those caps u use on a carb, so basically it wasn't being used at all. Thats why I bolted only the supply, return, and rear brake lines, and decided to get a sending unit that only has two inlets. Well I went back to that thread and read some things about the smell could get really bad. Is this true? I do plan to get a vented gas cap but I'm not sure if that'll help. I really would hate to have to take back off my lines to add the third one but if that's what I have to do then so be it. Thanks for all the replies

It's not "really bad sometimes". To give you my honest opinion. Since the day I removed my canister, I have never ever had a gas smell or fuel odor. I removed the canister, put a cap on the steel lines at the left front corner of the frame where it stops on the cross member, I still have the steel line from front to fuel tank and I still have a 3 port sending unit with all 3 hoses hooked up. I have never had a single issue with smell, performance, reliability or anything. Then I swapped to EFI, still not a single problem and I have dual fuel tanks. That was at least 4 years ago. You should be just fine.

Awesome thanks for the info on that. U saved me a whole lot of time cause I was on the fence about the third line. Mine was cap off in the exact same spot and since I got it strip right now I figured right now would be the best time to eliminate the line completely. But I now have another question for u. How hard would it be to add another gas tank if it wasn't installed that way to begin with? I'm very Mechanically inclined and pretty sure I could do it with some do's and don't's. Anyways again thanks for the help, this site has been the most helpful site I've ever been on.

Your very welcome. It wouldn't be hard to add a second tank. Just have to get the proper parts. The parts are side dependent, so which ever side you currently have, you will obviously need the parts for opposite side.
Here's what you would need:
-fuel tank
-tank support brackets w/straps & hardware
-sending unit
-Crossmember fuel lines
-switching valve of some type and the associated switch/wiring, this would depend on preference and fuel system type. If you have EFI, then you will need a TBI valve. If it's carburated, you can use either a TBI or carburated valve. The TBI valve requires a little more wiring, the carb ones are a little simpler wiring. If it's carb you could also use a cable driven mechanical valve.
And if you already have the truck apart, bed off, open space around the frame, it's even easier. And believe it or not, with some careful hunting you could probably find everything you need in good shape from a wrecking yard or pull-a-part yard for much less than all new parts. Then some cleaning and they probably be good as new.

Well sounds like I'm heading out to salvage yard this weekend! Really doesn't seem hard at all also, I think the hardest part is going to be finding one here at our yards being that a lot of the older ones had been smashed. Right now I'm in the middle of rebuilding my steering box, all new seals only cause the bearings don't look bad at all I'll have pics of that also.
-
Yea it's not to terrible. The fuel tank is a cake walk if even just the bed is off and not the cab, if both are off then it is a breeze. The cross member lines are only about as wide as the frame and go on the cross member just behind the bottom of the cab wall, easy peasy. If you can find a decent truck or a few with decent parts, you should have it made. Only thing I would get new if you even want to bother with new would be the valve itself and the switch in the dash of the cab. Unless the wires are damaged, a quick ohm test of the harness and even that could be reused.
-
Sorry I haven't posted in a while guys, I've been busy with a Comercial job that we just recently finish up on. So pics will be coming back really soon.
-
You do very nice work!
-
After looking at your post, I liked the idea of using your motor hoist to lift the cab off the frame. that gave me the idea to use mine to lift the bed off the truck when I put a Suburban gas tank in my 73.

I actually just removed the bed and used a 30 dollar 1 ton chain hoist from harbor frieght. I hung it off this old A frame welded pipe swing I had found years back. Was way easier than using the engine hoist. I have pics and I'll post them also as soon as I get a chance.

I hunted around town for this part and had no luck finding one. I had a long conversation with the speed shop tech at pep boys about the part though and was told the proportion valve rarely have to be replaced otherwise I'll have to order one off the web. So I decided to keep the original one clean it up and throw some paint on it
Came out nice after being bolted on 8)

Took care of the motor mount brackets & they turned out really well with the paint job they got. I know they look different from what the original were and that's cause of the pontiac 455 it had in it and I know it ran with it in it already so I'm not going to worry about finding chevy 350 bracket. Anyways it came out awesome!

Decided to go ahead and rebuild the steering box. I doubt it needs to be rebuilt but better to have it done since I have the truck torn apart.

Got all the seals rings ect, also got the box torn apart. Sorry no pics of the new stuff installed due to all the wheel grease on my hands.

Well shoot! >:( Anybody know where I can find this leaf spring only, I don't need all of them just this one. Thanks in advance. (http://i.imgur.com/d3QDRch.jpg)

Junkyard...but would be better to get new as the rest won't be far behind in failure

If your not going to haul stuff, remove the matching one from the other side. Best fix is a new pair of springs or air ride.
-
Would be great to just buy brand new leafs for both sides but it's so dang expensive. But I think I found somewhere that'll have just the one that I need. But I plan to buy air shocks for the rear the type you manually air up and the heaviest thing I plan to haul would maybe be a 6 foot trailer with shingles. Do yall think I should still replace the leaf or will I be OK without it? Thanks for the help guys.
-
I'm going to stand behind what I said, other leaves wont be far behind. you could run them for a bit if your really tight on money, but $300 should be able to get you all the springs and hardware needed to install.-this cost depends on if you have 3/1 or 4/1 springs
-
Ok so I've looked around town and found that I can get the whole leaf assembly for 50 bucks from the yard. I've look for a whole new assembly but the truck accessories shop sells them with a 2 inches lift only. So I'm going to go ahead and buy the one from the yard this weekend cause I really don't want my pickup to sit any higher than what it already was. Hopefully I'll have more luck with the other assembly.
-
Got some goodies for the truck. I still haven't been able to get the leaf springs but hopefully I will soon. Anyways tie rods, sleeves and shocks got a shot of paint and everything is bolted on and ready for alignment.

I also bought new calipers, rotors, and brakes. Hit that with some paint and took care of the backing plate springs and knuckles with some paint also. I also replaced the bushings with energy suspension products and replaced the upper and lower ball joints with moog. I'm not cutting any corners with this one and I'm almost done with the front suspension I'm just waiting on some more stuff and my elco is getting a face lift by yours truly so it may be a little b4 I post more pics. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161007/2431660f3de9cb8a13b724f3c42bfc5d.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161007/29735cb1d7f6c0d6718b2b12fdb4e63b.jpg) forgot to add that I've also replaced the bumper stops also. I'm trying to find the rear bumper stops in energy suspension but no luck. If anyone has a part # for some I'd appreciate it a ton!

Looking great man. I love 73-74 chevy trucks. I am building a custom 80 c10 with a 73-74 front clip conversion...
-
Keep up the good work man. Looks good and will ride like a champ with the Moog parts.
-
Coming along great, keep up the good work..

Looks Great!

Thanks for all the support and good words fellas! I love doing this kinda stuff, I've also started a 64 4 door impala build but I had to stop cause she was putting a BIG hole in my pocket and had nothing to hop into and cruise so I started working on something that isn't going to take much mods. Once done with my pickup it's back to the impala. Anyways thanks again fellas, should be about another week b4 I can really get back to it, elco is almost done so with that being said I'll be able to do some serious work to the truck hopefully old man winter won't be to brutal in texas this year.
