hi all, my brother would like me to take the gov loc from one of my spare axles, and drop it in his axle. what exactly would be involved in something like this? I figure I would need to re-shim the pinion and check backlash, basically a whole lot of work and measuring; even if I swap the ring gears and keep pinions
only reason(his thoughts) for not swapping whole axle is one, axle is dually, came from cab and chassis, so spring perches are in wrong spot. personally I think new spring perches may be the best route, unless it is just as easy to swap the gov lock into the axle. and he'll need to redo brakes(new brakes on his current axle)
just need to figure if I can do it or tell him no; do the spring perches.
thanks for the input guys

C&C could be a Dana 70...
Just the same as new gears. 14 bolt is easier than most. Don't disassemble the pinion carrier... depth is set by shimming the carrier to housing so no crush ring to deal with as long as you aren't doing pinion bearings.
Centering the carrier isn't too bad either...
